Brief Description
To prepare and excel in a career in business, technology and the public sector you need to leverage the power of data, analytics and the latest technologies to drive success.
Developed in collaboration with industry partners and boasting the opportunity for an industry internship, our Master of Science (MSc) Communications, Emerging Technologies and Industry Practices empowers you to become adept at using the emerging technologies including AI, data analytics and data communication and design thinking tools.
Thanks to our real-world-oriented teaching approach, you will gain hands-on real-world experience and develop key transferable skills like critical thinking, design thinking and problem-solving.
It includes practical internships to ensure you have on-the-ground experience and are ready to join the workforce.
During this programme, you will:
- Apply critical thinking, design thinking and collaboration tools to find creative solutions to real world industry problems.
- Learn how to effectively use data storytelling to enable informed decision making and drive success.
- Gain practical, real-world experience during an extended industry internship or design a creative problem-solving industry report.
- Integrate knowledge of emerging technologies and changing industry practices, including AI, into the operations and governance of industry and public sector employers.
Key information:
- Mainly online with some on-campus elements
- Complete full-time in one year or part-time over two years
- Modules taught across autumn, spring, and summer semesters
- Submit a creative problem-solving industry research report in the summer semester
- Or replace the summer semester with an Industry Internship
You will learn through a blend of:
- Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities
- Reflective practice and guided research
- Regular feedback from faculty and peers via group work and assessments
Full-time
Autumn Semester
- Design Thinking And Collaboration In Industry And The World We Live In (AH6001) will introduce you to the core components of design thinking and its role in manufacturing and service industries.
- Problem Solving Tools And Techniques (AU5051) will explore the essential business methodologies and tools, including 6 Sigma, Quality Management and Control, and the Taguchi method.
- Introduction To Data Communications (JM6102) will introduce core technical, numeracy and statistical concepts and methodologies required to read data and data-driven research.
- Introduction To Emerging Technologies (EE6211) will provide a comprehensive overview of the key emerging technologies and topics, including Cloud Computing, IoT, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), AR/VR, blockchain and more.
- Artificial Intelligence And Governance (IN6031) will provide a historical overview of the evolution of AI with a focus on governance and societal impact.
Spring Semester
- Data analytics with R (MA5021) will provide an introduction to programming in R and RStudio for data analytics.
- Advanced data storytelling (JM6103) will explore techniques to extract key features from large datasets and will provide an opportunity to put theory into practice and develop a range of data narratives.
- Critical thinking for effective decision making (AH6002) will introduce the concept of critical thinking, its associated challenges, industry examples and its role in business decision making.
- Emerging trends in industry (AH6012) will explore the topic of strategic corporate foresight and involve a series of seminars with industry practitioners to identify key current and future industry trends.
- Linking learning (AH6022) will provide a framework to reflect on your overall learning, linking your selected individual modules and the programme of study.
Summer Semester
- Industry internship Opportunities will be offered following a competitive process involving industry partners. If you have experience in industry, you may be able to apply for an exemption from the internship.
Or
- Creative problem solving in and for industry research report (AH6013) will enable students to complete a comprehensive research project to suggest resolutions for a complex, 'real world' industry problem.

- Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8,) with at least a second class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant discipline.
