Brief Description

The energy sector is transforming rapidly and faces a growing need for skilled professionals.

UL’s Master of Science (MSc) in Energy Science and Engineering is designed to meet this demand, equipping graduates with the expertise to lead the transition towards a sustainable, zero-carbon future.

Grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the programme integrates science and engineering, offering interdisciplinary training across energy generation, distribution, storage, and sustainability.

Students can specialise in areas such as engineering for net-zero carbon, renewable and nuclear energy, battery storage systems, electric vehicles, and grid stability, while also strengthening their foundations in earth science, computational modelling, and research methods.

Developed in close collaboration with industry, the programme ensures graduates gain not only technical knowledge but also key professional skills in measurement and analysis of energy flows, scientific reporting, and applied problem-solving; preparing them to make a real impact in the global energy transition.

There is an exit route for students after completion of the taught modules. Students who exit after the autumn and spring semesters will earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Science and Engineering . Students who continue onto the summer semester will be awarded an MSc.

During this programme, you will:

  • Address interdisciplinary aspects of energy generation, distribution, storage, and sustainability.
  • Gain hands-on experience working on group and individual research projects, under the guidance of a designated supervision team.

  • Investigate important topics including batteries, wind energy, modern power systems, and energy management.

  • Acquire a greater understanding of the role of engineers and scientists in tackling climate change in areas such as net zero carbon and modern grids and transmission of power.

  • Gain a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics and scientific method to equip you to adapt and design future projects in this rapidly changing field.

Key information:

  • Complete full-time in one year

  • Delivered on campus

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semester

  • Core modules in autumn and spring

  • Choose four elective modules in semester 1 and three in semester 2

  • Collaborate with peers under the guidance of a designated supervision team, honing your investigative skills and gaining detailed knowledge essential for careers in the evolving energy sector.

  • Group Project conducted in the semester 2.

  • Energy Research Project (thesis) based on your own research conducted in summer (late May to July)

You will learn through a blend of:

  • Lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical, project and peer learning

  • Supervised, group and self-directed research

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers through group work, oral presentations, interviews and a mix of continuous and end-of-term assessments

Core modules:

  • Scientific Communication and Literature Review (PH6032) enables students to analyse scientific literature and technical reports, organise the results of scientific experimentation and analysis and present the information at conferences or for publication in scientific literature, technical reports and theses.

Summer Semester

  • Energy Summer Research Project (PH6013) develops the ability to design, plan and carry out a research project and provides training in self-directed research methods and analysis used in science and engineering.

Relevant course materials - such as books and journal articles - will be available digitally via the UL Glucksman Library’s online resources.

  1. Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 1 (2:1) in an energy related field like Physics, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Science Education, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering)
  2. Applications from graduates with work experience are especially welcome. Wider criteria based on candidate’s experience and equivalent degrees will be accepted as determined by the course board.
  3. The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.
