Brief Description

Position yourself at the forefront of mechanical engineering innovation and boost your employment prospects with Irish and multinational companies across various sectors.

UL’s one-year Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering provides in-depth knowledge of advanced mechanical engineering methods, equipping you with the skills and credentials to excel in a dynamic and evolving field.

Developed to meet industry demand and with strong links to UL’s leading research institute - Bernal Institute, the programme combines high-level skills in design, analysis, and communication.

Suitable for anyone who wants to work in industries across a wide range of sectors like Energy, Automation, Biomedical, Chemicals and Pharmaceutical, and Manufacturing.

The course also provides a pathway to the internationally recognised Chartered Engineer status that can significantly boost your career prospects.

During this programme, you will:

  • Gain high-level skills in design, analysis and testing to meet the needs of the mechanical engineering sector.

  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of advanced mechanical engineering methods, including theoretical foundations, computational techniques, and experimental methods.

  • Develop an understanding of the value of technical communications and project planning, completing a research project that bridges the gap between academic learning and practical application by engaging with current industry challenges in collaboration with leading companies.

  • Gain skills that will enhance your employment prospects with Irish and multinational companies across various sectors, including energy, biomedical, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, construction, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

Key information:

  • Complete full-time in one year

  • Delivered on campus

  • Modules taught during autumn and spring semesters

  • Submit a research project (thesis) at the end of the summer semester

  • Receive training in technical communications and project planning

  • Take 2 core modules and 3 - 4 elective modules each semester

You will learn through a blend of:

  • Lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities

  • Reflective practice and guided research

  • Regular feedback from faculty and peers

Year 1

Autumn Semester

Core modules:

  • Research Project (ME6161) enables students to apply the knowledge learned from the programme to a research problem or challenge in their chosen field of study.

Electives – choose 4

Spring Semester

Core modules:

  • Research Project (ME6162) provides students with the skills to tackle practical engineering challenges in industry or for a potential career as a research engineer.

Electives – choose 3:

Summer Semester

  • Research Project (ME6163) concludes with a report (maximum 12,500 words) and a substantive presentation to a specially convened symposium.

Relevant course materials - such as books and journal articles - will be available digitally via the UL Glucksman Library’s online resources.

For more information on each module, you can search the faculty, school and module code on UL’s Book of Modules

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honour, grade 2 (2:2) in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field relating to engineering dynamics, solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and mechanics of materials.

  • The university may shortlist and invite you to an interview.

Holly Powell, B.Eng. (Mech.), Master’s in Mechanical Engineering

"The Master’s in Mechanical Engineering allowed me to develop a well-rounded skillset which meant that I could choose from a wide range of great opportunities when I graduated. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the chance to work my dream job at the forefront of the photolithography industry, where I have almost unlimited opportunities to travel and take on exciting technical challenges."
