EV heat pumps present unique thermal management challenges. OEMs want to use existing R-1234yf systems as well as maintain low refrigerant flammability and low overall system carbon footprint. They simultaneously want to keep GWP below 150 for the EPA technology transition and to reduce TFA production 50x.
High-flammability solutions like R-290 and high-pressure materials like R-744 require complex system changes and component development, straining OEM timelines for regulatory compliance and product development. While R-1234yf exhibits reduced heat pump performance compared to R-134a, R-444A, a direct GWP replacement for R1234yf, uses existing YF systems, improves low-temperature performance, and boosts efficiency for extended EV range.
