Summary of the Results of Internal Migration in 2018

The number of inter-prefectural migrants was 2,535,601, the rate of migration was up from the previous year
- The number of All nationalities internal migrants was 5,359,174 and the rate of migration was 4.24%, up 0.04 points from the previous year.
- The number of All nationalities inter- prefectural migrants was 2,535,601 and the rate of migration was 2.01%, up 0.03 points from the previous year.
- The number of All nationalities intra- prefectural migrants was 2,823,573 and the rate of migration was 2.23%, up 0.01 points from the previous year.

The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo was 79,844
- Regarding the net-migration for prefectures, eight prefectures had positive net-migration in 2018: Tokyo-to (79,844 persons), Saitama-ken (24,652 persons), Kanagawa-ken (23,483 persons), and so on. The net-migration in Shiga-ken (409 persons) changed from negative to positive. The rate of positive net-migration in Tokyo-to (0.58%) was the highest, followed by Saitama-ken (0.34%), Kanagawa-ken (0.26%), and so on. The rate of positive net-migration in Chiba-ken and Aichi-ken was down from the previous year.
- On the other hand, thirty-nine prefectures had negative net-migration in 2018: Ibaraki-ken (7,744 persons), Fukushima-ken (7,421 persons), Niigata-ken (6,901 persons), and so on. Compared with the previous year, the number of negative net-migration in Ibaraki-ken increased by 2,590 persons. The rate of negative net-migration in Aomori-ken and Nagasaki-ken (0.50%) was the highest, followed by Akita-ken (0.45%), Yamanashi-ken (0.42%), and so on.

The number of positive net-migration for Tokyo Area was 139,868, increased by 14,338 persons from the previous year
- The net-migration for all three major metropolitan areas (Tokyo Area, Nagoya Area and Osaka Area) had a positive net-migration of 123,054 persons, increased by 11,761 persons from the previous year.
- The Tokyo Area had a positive net-migration of 139,868 persons, increased by 14,338 persons from the previous year. The rate of positive net-migration was 0.38%, up 0.04 points from the previous year.
- The Nagoya Area had a negative net-migration of 7,376 persons. The rate of negative net-migration was 0.07%, up 0.03 points from the previous year.
- The Osaka Area had a negative net-migration of 9,438 persons. The rate of negative net-migration was 0.05%, unchanged for the previous year.
