ABOUT SDEWES CENTRE

The International Centre for Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES Centre) is a non-governmental and a non-profit scientific organization based in Zagreb, Croatia. It engages in specific R&D activities that address the problems common for the countries of the East and Southeast European and Mediterranean regions.

Vision: Providing a platform for communication and exchange of ideas between scientist and researchers that promotes multidisciplinary approach to sustainability.

Mission: Creating multidisciplinary research and development innovation teams and providing comprehensive R&D activities, assessment and consultation on the research subjects that represent the most important challenges of sustainable development.

SDEWES Centre has almost 800 regular and supporting members from over 50 countries (6 continents). Its members are experts, professors, scientists, students and business people in the field of sustainable development of energy, water and environment systems.

Activities

  • Organization of conferences, courses, summer schools etc. + See more
    SDEWES Centre is the executive organizer of the SDEWES conference series, which has emerged as the leading conference on the topic of sustainability and is currently one of the best scientific conferences on the topic in the world. SDEWES Conference series started in 2002 in Dubrovnik, Croatia and has been growing ever since. The last SDEWES Conference in Dubrovnik brought together 540 distinguished scientists, project leaders, government representatives and other experts from 65 countries from all continents.

    The Conference has been a biannual event until 2012 when it became an annual event but with a unique location regime. Every two years, the Conference is held in Dubrovnik, which has become a permanent seat of the Conference, and in the years between, the Conference is held on different locations. In 2012 it was held in Macedonia and in 2014 on a cruiser from Venice to Istanbul and back. SDEWES2016 will be held in Lisbon, Portugal.

    In 2014, a regional series of the Conference was introduced, that focuses on South East Europe. The 1st regional SEE SDEWES Conference was successfully held in Ohrid, Macedonia and the 2nd regional SEE SDEWES was held in Piran, Slovenia in 2016.

    SDEWES Centre is currently involved in several EU projects (FP7 and H2020) and provides expert opinions and guidance to partners. The work performed by SDEWES research groups reflects the sustainability aspects integrated in the SDEWES Centre statute and other decisions and Conference resolutions.     SDEWES Centre has developed excellent cooperation with many leading journals and institutions, which helps its members and conference participants to publish their excellent research results. Papers from SDEWES Conferences are published in special issues in numerous partner journals such as Applied Energy, Energy - The International Journal, Journal of Cleaner Production, Energy Conversion and Management and many others.

    Since 2013, SDEWES Centre also publishes an international, open-source, scientific Journal of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems – JSDEWES, dedicated to the improvement and dissemination of knowledge on methods, policies and technologies for increasing the sustainability of development. JSDEWES publishes in yearly volumes and quarterly issues, and is indexed ina many online databeses such as Scopus, Inspec, Doaj, Hrcak and others.

  • From September 29 to October 3, 2025, we hosted the "Summer School on Energy Planning of 100% Renewable Energy Systems" , at the Inter University Center (IUC) in Dubrovnik. Over five focused days, participants explored energy and climate modeling for smart energy systems, together with dynamic modeling of ecological, economic, social, and technical parameters
    We welcomed 20 participants representing 13 countries. Alongside intensive sessions and hands-on work, they made the most of the experience, building friendships, meeting new colleagues, and sparking ideas for future projects and research.
    Applications for the 4th edition are coming soon, possibly with a few surprises.

  • Since 2013, the SDEWES Center has published the Journal of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (JSDEWES), which is indexed in Scopus and Emerging Science Citation Index with impact factor (IF) of 2.3.
    Three new journals have started publication since 2024 year:

    1.) JSDI with Editor-in-Chief : Prof. Goran Krajačić, University of Zagreb, Croatia.

    2.) JSDNAREMA with Editors-in-Chief :
    Xue-Chao Wang, Beijing Normal University, China,
    Petar Sabev Varbanov, Széchenyi István University, Hungary.

    3.) JSDSEN with Editor-in-Chief : Prof. Francesco Calise, University of Naples Federico II, Italy.

    Journals JSDI and JSDNAREMA have published 2 issues of the first Volume (for 2025 year) and have Article Publishing fee waived until December 31, 2025. JSDSEN has waived fee until December 31, 2026.
  • The updated list for citation year 2023 includes as many as 21 members out of 43, or nearly half of the SDEWES International Scientific Committee in the 2% of the most influential scientists in the world today!

  • The "Summer School on Energy Planning of 100% Renewable Energy Systems" , held from September 2 to 6, 2024 at the Inter University Center, Dubrovnik, was focused on energy and climate modeling of smart energy systems along with dynamic modeling of relevant ecological, economic, sociological and technical parameters.
    24 participants from 16 different countries took part in the summer school. In addition to acquiring new knowledge, the participants used the full potential of the summer school and had a lot of fun, met new friends, colleagues or possible partners in future projects and research!

Autori najboljih radova su 1. Karlo Kvaternik, 2. Marko Starčević i 3. Jan Karl Ormuž. Prvoplasirani će biti nagrađen s novčanom nagradom od 1.000,00 EUR bruto, a drugo i trećeplasirani imaju pravo na besplatnu kotizaciju za jednu od SDEWES konferencija koje će se održati 2024. godine. Pravo prijave imaju svi studenti s diplomskim radom obranjenim u akademskoj godini 2022./2023. s ocjenom izvrstan i s temom iz područja održivog razvoja energetike, voda i okoliša.   • Project 'COASTENERGY' was declared the best EU project in Croatia in the category 'Contribution to science and innovation'. In this year's selection for the "Best County EU" project in Croatia, among 37 other candidates, the winner in the "Contribution to science and innovation" category was the Istrian County project COASTENERGY - Blue energy in ports and coastal urban areas. The project also won third place according to the popular public votes. SDEWES Centre participated in the project as a project partner in charge of the WP3.
  • Povjerenstvo Međunarodnog centra za održivi razvoj energetike, voda i okoliša (SDEWES Centre) odabralo je tri najbolja diplomska rada studenata FSB-a za 2019./20. te za 2020./21. Autori najboljih radova su Dino Kovačević u ak. godini 2019./20. te Dominik Rašić u ak. godini 2020./21. Prvoplasirani će biti nagrađeni s novčanom nagradom od 5.000,00 HRK svaki, a drugo i trećeplasirani imaju pravo na besplatnu kotizaciju za bilo koju od SDEWES konferencija u 2022. godini. Čestitamo
  • 20 members of the SDEWES International Scientific Committee were listed among the 2% most influential scientists in the world today in the updated list for citation year 2020. The list has been made and updated by a group of researchers from Stanford University led by professor John Ioannidis. They surveyed 100,000 top scientists using Scopus database and classified them into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields.
    "We have created a publicly available database that provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator", the authors explained.

  • SDEWES Centre has awarded the best graduate theses in the past academic year of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in the field of sustainable development of energy, water and the environment systems. A committee consisting of Prof. Nataša Markovska, Prof. Nikola Ružinski and Prof. Aleksander Zidanšek made a decision on the three best graduate theses and the best authors are Mario Majdandžić, Luka Pavlinek and Vanja Kušen. Best thesis author, Mario Majdandžić will receive a cash prize in the amount of 5,000 HRK and the other two authors will receive a fee waiver for one of SDEWES conferences in 2018. Congratulations!

  • SDEWES Centre has awarded the best graduate theses in the past academic year of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in the field of sustainable development of energy, water and the environment systems. A committee consisting of Prof. Nataša Markovska, Prof. Nikola Ružinski and Prof. Aleksander Zidanšek made a decision on the three best graduate theses and the best authors are Dominik Dominković, Nikola Matak and Karlo Kupres. They will be rewarded with a fee waiver for a SDEWES conference of their choice, and the best thesis author will also have fully paid transport costs and accommodation during the selected conference.
