Figure 1: Construction of chicken brain chimeras and their appearance.
From: A genetically female brain is required for a regular reproductive cycle in chicken brain chimeras
(a) Brain primordium together with mesenchyme and surface ectoderm was exchanged between embryos before development of the gonadal primordium. Three types of grafting (black region in the schema) were performed: WB, BS and FB transplantation. (b) Appearance of the chimeras. MM 38 and FM 1 received FB and BS grafts, respectively, and the yellow pigmentation originated from the grafted tissue (Hypeco chicken) (MM 38 at PD11 and FM 1 at PD17). All other White Leghorn chimeras presented in this panel received a WB graft from White Leghorn chickens. FF 449 chimera at PD731, MF 473 chimera at PD708, FM 395 chimera at PD752 and MM 450 chimera at PD730. FM 395 and MM 450 chimeras were treated daily with Prograf, an immunosuppressive agent, from PD120. This treatment prevented immune rejection in FM 395.
