Call for Research Papers on Nutritional Security in Asia and the Pacific: Challenges and Opportunities
Asian Development Bank Institute
Economies in Asia and the Pacific are undergoing a rapid transition in nutritional patterns due to ongoing shifts in economic conditions, urbanization, and global interconnectedness. Unfortunately, this transformation is accompanied by intricate nutritional failures among the population: childhood undernutrition, escalating obesity and non-communicable disease prevalence, and micronutrient deficiencies affecting diverse age groups. The worsening picture of nutrition calls for a transformative change in the current food and agriculture scenario. This includes a targeted approach to improving affordability and access to nutritious food while considering challenges due to climate change and conflicts. As a proactive measure, we are exploring potential future opportunities pertaining to nutritional security in Asia and the Pacific.
The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) is inviting submissions of high-quality empirical and applied research papers on the theme of "Challenges and Opportunities for Enhancing Nutritional Security in Asia and the Pacific." Papers may also be devoted to literature review and meta-analysis. Selected papers will have the opportunity to be presented at an ADBI conference. They may also be considered for an edited book highlighting policy solutions for improving nutritional security in Asia and the Pacific. We strongly encourage in-depth exploration of the following topics of interest:
- Studies investigating the effects of interventions in improving nutritional security through case-control and randomized controlled trials
- Sustainable agricultural approaches for enhancing local-level nutritional security and resilience
- Health and nutritional impacts of introducing diversified diets at the population level
- Sustainable dietary approaches at the population and local levels for improving nutritional security
- The role of markets in facilitating the expansion of nutritious and sustainable diets
- Contributions of development programs (e.g., government initiatives, collective efforts, and NGOs) in encouraging nutrition security
- Exploration of rural-urban disparities and the effects of urbanization in the context of nutrition security
- Connections with global value chains concerning nutrition security
- Empowerment of women and intra-household decision-making regarding food allocation and purchases
- Assessing subjective well-being factors (e.g., happiness, life satisfaction, andloneliness) in the context of nutritional challenges and opportunities
This call for papers highlights the significance of addressing nutritional security and its multifaceted implications for health, agriculture, markets, development programs, gender dynamics, and overall well-being. Submissions exploring these aspects are encouraged to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of effective strategies to tackle nutrition challenges and present opportunities in Asia and the Pacific and beyond.
