Digitalization and Sustainable Economic Development
Asian Development Bank Institute and Sim Kee Boon Institute, Singapore Management University
Singapore

Digitalization such as big data and online platform growth is helping to improve productivity and competitiveness across and within economies. It also changes the landscape for international capital flows and trade. While digitalization can have substantial positive effects on macroeconomic performance, the labor market implications of automation and artificial intelligence remain uncertain. Digitalization could also enhance regional and global economic integration and help economies achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

ADBI and the Singapore Management University’s Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics (SKBI/SMU) will co-host a conference at SMU in Singapore on 13-14 May 2020 examining digitalization’s potential to promote sustainable, inclusive, and balanced economic growth and development in Asia. This includes digitalization’s capacity to ease market entry barriers, reduce inequality, and improve development, as well as policies that support the use of digital technologies to advance sustainable economic development.

ADBI and SKBI/SMU are seeking original, unpublished research paper submissions in any field related to digitalization and sustainable economic development to be featured at the conference. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Digitalization and macroeconomic performance
  • Digitalization and international capital flows
  • Digitalization and trade
  • Digitalization and sustainable economic development
  • Digitalization and the labor market
  • The role of digital transformation on productivity and competitiveness
  • Digitalization and the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Financial and economic integration implications of digital transformation
  • Digital currencies and the international monetary system

Selected papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication as ADBI working papers and as part of an ADBI book.
