Samoa
Although the Samoan economy is small, the country successfully recovered from the cyclone that struck in 2004, and reached stable economic growth by 2007 particularly in agriculture, coastal fishing and tourism. However, manufacturing is sluggish due to the 2008 global financial crisis, leading to a negative growth of 3.4 percent, and an earthquake off the coast of Samoa followed by a tsunami in 2009 caused major damage. JICA provides assistance in forming a recycle-based island society, strengthening disaster monitoring and warning capacity, improving the quality of teachers through volunteers, and building power supply economic infrastructure.
