Certification Program of Computational Mechanics Engineers

The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) has initiated the certification program of CM (Computational Mechanics) Engineers in 2003 in conjunction with a number of computational mechanics-related societies in Japan. The purpose of this program is to qualify the levels of knowledge as well as skill of a computational mechanics engineer needed to perform reliable and accurate computational mechanics analyses by himself / herself. The scope of this program will cover the wide range of levels from beginners to high level engineers, and includes the finite element method, the finite different method and other numerical analysis methods used in computational mechanics.

At this time, certifications for three fields and nine classes, which include "Senior analyst grade," "Grade 1," "Grade 2," and "Basic Grade" CM engineers in solid mechanics, thermal fluid fields, and vibration engineering, have been developed. Basic Grade certificates will be issued to applicants who are deemed to satisfy the certification requirements based on documentary examination. Applicant scoring prescribes scores for the respective grades in certification examination for Grades 1 and 2. Grade 1 applicants who are screened by application materials and pass an oral examination shall be certified as Senior Analysts.

The equivalence of the JSME/CM Certificated Senior Analysis grade to a NAFEMS (The National Agency for Finite Element Methods and Standards) PSE (Professional Simulation Engineer) license has been recognized in 2014( https://www.jsme.or.jp/cee/mutual-recognition ). Some of Senior Analysis grade CM engineers have been certified as NAFEMS PSE.

At present, the certification examinations are organized by the Innovation Center of JSME with the cooperation of six related divisions and four branches of JSME, under co-sponsorship by 53 domestic associations related to computational mechanics. The total of 8,954 persons have passed the examination for the certification by 2018.

It is expected that this qualification will be mandatory requirement for computational mechanics engineers in the near future. JSME strongly hopes engineers working in the field of computational mechanics to challenge acquisition of this certificate.
