Segmentation Antibodies
John Reinitz has made a collection of antibodies against segmentation gene products available to the research community. We act as the distribution center for researchers residing in Asia. Researchers in other parts of the world should send their requests to the following local distributors:

Exclusion of India and Israel from the region that
they normally belong to is purely due to the difficulty encountered
in sending antibodies to these countries. No political implication is
intended.
How to receive samples of these antibodies.
1. Please send an e-mail to saitoknig.ac.jp, indicating the code, antigen, and the host animal of the antibody needed according to the table below. Do not forget to include your mailing address. Addresses in Japan should be written in Japanese, if possible.
2. Please type " segmentation Ab request" (case insensitive, do NOT spell out "Ab") in the Subject line. Your request will be acknowledged by an automatic reply e-mail. If you do not receive such an e-mail within 24 hours, please send your request by FAX (+81-559-81-6825). Although an automatic reply will also be made to requests from non-Asian countries, such requests will be ignored. Please contact your local distribution center, indicated above.
3. Please make sure that your request mail does not contain any non-standard characters, such as Hanguel or characteres with umlaut, accent etc. If you use such characters, my computer will not be able to encode it properly, and your request will likely be trashed with SPAMs. Please check not only the mail text, but also your sender information (the "From" box).
4. Requests from Japan will be sent on ice at recipient's cost. We will cover Fed Ex shipping costs to other countries within Asia. For international shipping, please notify us of any customs regulations for importing antibodies.
5. The following paper should be cited upon publication using these antibodies:

The symbols in the table are a rough working
measure of serum quality (information provided by David Kosman):
+++ minimal background and high signal at several hundred fold
dilutions.
++ higher concentrations are needed and background is higher.
+ a usable serum but preabsorbtion is required.
? has not yet been tested extensively; may have to play around with
different conditions.
Notes
(1) This antibody has ubiquitous nuclear stain artefact.
(2) Although this antibody is classified as +++, we have received
many comments that this antibody does not stain well. It is possible
that our aliquot does not maintain the quality of the original
batch.
(3) This antibody crossreacts with E. coli beta-galactosidease,
presumably because the antigen was a Caudal-beta-galactosidase fusion
protein.

As part of a long term project to model the segmentation cascade from maternal gradients to wingless/engrailed stripe formation, our lab is constructing a precise numerical atlas of blastoderm gene expression. In order to do this, we have raised a panel of antibodies to segmentation genes (D. Kosman, S. Small, and J. Reinitz: Rapid preparation of a panel of polyclonal antibodies to Drosophila segmentation proteins. Development Genes and Evolution, 208(5): 290-294, 1998) which we would like to make available to the fly community. Confocal images made with these sera and quantative data on gene expression in segmentation network can be found at FlyEx Database.
