Cold region plant. Found from Hokkaido to Kyushu Island in mountain grasslands.

O-iwa-kagami(Schizocodon soldanelloides) Zdjęcie (Apr. 26) kwiec., maj

Sub-alpine plant. Found along the riverbed in the Kumi area of Dōgo Island. On the mainland of Japan this plant is found in sub-alpine regions, however in Oki it is found at 0m above sea level.

Vulnerable Species (Shimane Prefecture)

Cold region plant. Endemic rhododendron found in Dōgo Island. Rhododendron are found on mountain ridges and rocky fields, however in Oki they are also found on flat plains. An Oki Rhododendron festival takes place in Murakami-ke Residence in the Goka Area in late April.

A variety of Japanese dandelion found all around the Oki Islands. Suveys and removal of the stronger, invasive Western dandelion are taking place around the islands to protect the environment of this native species.

Continental plant. Found in secluded areas from the Tohoku region to the Chugoku region. Within Shimane Prefecture it is only found in the Oki Islands.

Cold region plant (Northern-japan). Found in the Katakuri Garden in Dōgo Island. Found in mountainous areas on the mainland, in Oki it is found close to the sea. This plant’s environment are maintained by local volunteers.

Warm region plant. Found in limited areas on the mainland (Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions), in Oki it is commonly found on the coast and in rocky areas on the coast.

Warm region plant. Found in coastal areas around the Oki Islands. The fruit can be used to make fruit liquor. The leaves turn red in autumn.

Japanese skimmia(Skimmia japonica var. intermedia f. repens) Zdjęcie (Apr. 10) kwiec., maj, czerw.

Cold region plant. Whilst typically found on forest floors in areas with heavy snow fall on the mainland, this plant can also be found in Oki.

Japanese cheesewood(Pittosporum tobira) Zdjęcie (May. 14) kwiec., maj, czerw.

Warm region plant. Found south of the Tohoku Region and below, Shikoku, Kyushu and Ryukyu Islands. The Japanese name, „Tobera” (Door) comes from the tradition of placing it in the doorway to ward off evil spirits during the last day of winter on the traditional calendar.

Wild radish(Raphanus sativus var. raphanistroides) Zdjęcie (May. 21) kwiec., maj, czerw.

This wild radish is found along the coast in the Oki Islands. The stalk is spicy and can be used as a condiment. Every spring, a Wild radish festival takes place in Chiburijima Island where the flowers bloom all over Mt. Akahage.

Found all over Japan, in Oki it is found in coastal, forest and mountainous grassland areas.

Mitsuba-iwagasa(Spiraea blumei var. obtusa) Zdjęcie (May. 18) kwiec., maj

Continental plant. Found west from Fukui Prefecture along the Sea of Japan side, and the southern part of Korean Peninsula. In Oki, it is found on the coast, and rocky areas and cliffs on the roadsides.

Wild Camellia japonica(Camellia japonica) Zdjęcie (Nov. 12) stycz., luty, mar., kwiec.listop., grudz.,

A native species found all over Japan excluding Hokkaido Island, this evergreen broadleaf tree is also found on all four Oki Islands.

Cold region plant. Found in mountainous regions on the mainland, but in Oki it is found on the coast.

Cold region plant (Northern species). Found in areas with heavy snow fall on the mainland, but can be seen on the coast in Oki.
