To all new incoming first-year students of the University of Tokyo

April 1, 2021

More than a year has passed since the spread of the new coronavirus in Japan began in earnest. Even though the state of emergency for Tokyo and the three surrounding prefectures declared by the government on January 8 was lifted on March 21, the spread of the infection is still unpredictable.

Please see the message delivered on March 19 from the Dean-elect of the College of Arts and Sciences with regards to the education policy of the College during the coronavirus pandemic. The University of Tokyo and its College of Arts and Sciences welcome you to our campus. Throughout the S semester, the University of Tokyo and the College of Arts and Sciences intend to expand the opportunities for face-to-face activities while providing sufficient measures to prevent the spread of infection throughout all aspects of campus life, including not only lectures but also extra-curricular activities.

As we enter the new school year and welcome all you incoming first-year students, we, as the University of Tokyo and as the College of Arts and Sciences, would like to make a request with regards to your future education and research activities. In line with the purpose mentioned above, we would like you to have sufficient awareness of being a student of the University of Tokyo. I would also like you to be aware of how important it is for all of us to safely hold the Matriculation Ceremony scheduled for April 12 at the Nippon Budokan.

Though this is the time that face-to-face activities become active, such as welcoming incoming students and recruiting them to student activity groups or athletic clubs, please consider resuming the activities gradually while paying close attention to infection control measures and for example, creatively introduce activities online.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

April 1, 2021

Teruo Fujii, President of the University of Tokyo
Takumi Moriyama, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
