Hisayoshi NOZAKI (Assocate Professor) 1st Field collection in Japanese freshwater habits and establishment of new cultures of the colonial volvocalean green algae, and their morphological and molecular examinations. The data will be used for taxonomy and/or evoltionary biology of sex and multicelluarity, depending upon the interst of the UTRIP student.

Hirokazu TSUKAYA (Professor) 1st Re-examination of "unusual" type of leaves
1) Research description: There are a lot of "unusual" leaves and stems on the earth. Previously we only could describe their uniqueness based on comparative morphology, but nowadays we have many hints to understand the background/mechanisms of their uniqueness from our knowledges on developmental genetics on model plants such as Arabidopsis. Yet, we need some basic data on them before applying techniques of molecular genetics to them. During this program, we wish to reexamine one or a few species of unusual leaves/stems from a developmental poit of view to get clues for further studies.

Trainings on anatomy and plant biology are preferred.

Plant morphology
3)Academic background or research project experience to be considered at selection
No, but applicants with a background in Developmental Genetics or Plant Sciences are desirable.

Students who are interested in Evo-devo of plants are the best fitted.
