Study Group on Structural Changes in Mobility and Future Directions of Automobile Policies Beyond 2030 (Study Group on 2030 Mobility Visions) to be Inaugurated
March 31, 2020
Background to and purpose of inaugurating the study group
As the automobile industry is facing great changes in environments surrounding automobiles, as seen in “CASE,” a new trend in the industry concerning connectivity, autonomous driving, services involving automobiles, and electrification of automobiles, conventional ideal approaches to industries, societies and systems related to automobiles and mobility are expected to change in a significant manner. Industries tend to have a sense of uncertainty about the short-term future of such changes but can envisage changes in the mid- to long-term. Bearing in mind these characteristics, METI should advance its policies by upholding decade-based mid- to long-term goals and specific visions for the industry.
To this end, METI will inaugurate the study group in order to hold discussions on [i] challenges to be overcome for the survival of the automobile industry as well as future directions for industrial policies and [ii] future directions of revolutionary changes in the mobility society, taking into consideration the current situations of the automobile industry in Japan and all over the world and the expected structural changes in the industry, e.g., CASE, in the coming years before around 2030. The study group is scheduled to hold its first meeting on March 31, 2020.
For the members of the study group, see the Appendix.
