Energy and Environment Policy
Concerning handling of multi-nuclide removal equipment (ALPS) treated water at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, purified thorough ALPS and other equipment, the Subcommittee on Handling of the ALPS-Treated Water held a series of comprehensive discussions from November 2016 on such water, including potential negative impacts on society (e.g., reputational damage) and compiled the discussion results into a report in February, 2020. In response, based on the report, the government will hold a meeting as an opportunity to receive opinions from a wide variety of concerned parties, including representatives of local municipalities and associations in the fields of agriculture, forestry and fisheries as an effort towards determining the government’s policies for approaches to handling ALPS-treated water.

1. Target concerned parties

Based on the report, the government will receive opinions from representatives of: municipalities (Fukushima Prefectural Government, cities, towns and villages in Fukushima Prefecture, and nearby municipalities of these areas); related associations (associations in the fields of agriculture, forestry and fisheries, commerce and industry, distribution, tourism and consumer affairs inside and outside Fukushima Prefecture as well as nationwide associations); and other concerned parties.

2. Outline of the first meeting

Note: The program of the meeting may change as a measure against the novel coronavirus disease. If such changes occur, METI will issue an immidiate press release regarding changes.

Representatives of: Fukushima Prefecture, Fukushima Prefectural Inns and Hotels Environmental Health Industry Association, the Federation of Societies of Fukushima Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Fukushima Prefectural Forestry Cooperative, the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations, the Association of Fukushima Municipalities and the Association of Municipalities in the Soma Area.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Reconstruction Agency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Ministry of the Environment

3. Call for public comments

In addition to receiving opinions at the meeting above, METI will open a call for public comments in written documents from early April 2020. For more information, METI will separately announce on the portal website (in Japanese) concerning the government’s measures for addressing decommissioning and contaminated water.
