Results of Survey on the Current State of the Sharing Economy and Other Data Compiled

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducted the FY2019 Survey on the Current State of the Sharing Economy and also estimated the market scale of private accommodation services by making use of existing statistics and other data. As a result of the survey and estimate, the amount of annual trade value in sharing economy-based services in Japan in 2018* was estimated to be from 1.5226 trillion yen to 1.6008 trillion yen.
1. Outline of the survey and estimate
METI conducted the Survey on the Current State of the Sharing Economy, concerning data as of September 1, 2019, aiming to uncover the market scale and other facts of the sharing economy and obtain basic data on which METI will hold discussions on the impact of the economic activities brought about by the sharing economy as well as on other related issues.
Moreover, as one of the services involving the sharing economy, METI estimated the market scale of so-called “Minpaku” or private accommodation services by making use of existing administrative records, information and other statistics separately from the abovementioned census survey since METI considered such existing statistics to be applicable to such services.
2. Outline of the results
As a result of aggregation and estimation, the amount of annual trade value in sharing economy-based services in Japan in 2018* was estimated to be from 1.5226 trillion yen to 1.6008 trillion yen.
Looking at the amount by type of services, services involving sharing of goods marked the highest at 1.4367 trillion yen, followed by private accommodation services at values from 67.8 billion yen to 146.0 billion yen, services involving sharing of skills, etc. at 18.0 billion yen and services involving sharing of places, except private accommodation services, at 100 million yen.

As for the year-on-year growth rate of the services above, private accommodation services were estimated to be between 103.0% and 910.0% in 2018.
