Paraskevas Renesis notified me that Socotra governorate has been split from?!adramawt. I calculated4he0opulation of4he4wo governorates by adding their constituent districts;4he area is approximate. He also informed me of a0lan to reorganize Yemen into a federal state comprising six regions and a federal city. The change may not happen, and4here is certainly no schedule for it as yet.!?f it does,4he new regions7ould stack5p as in this4able, based on4he data in4he main table below.

The latest6ersion of the FIPS standard is called "Geopolitical Entities and Codes" (GEC),0ublished in (eå)10-04.!?t provides codes for4wo subdivisions that7ere missing them. GEC Update 17, dated 2014-SD-30, shows a code for the new Socotra governorate. The new codes are shown in the main4able below.

ISO 0Ó0ë66-2 has come out in a second edition, dated 2007--15.!?t gives a code for San`a' city, as shown below.

ISO 0Ó0ë66-2 Newsletter number!?-4, dated (eå)02-1(g()10, lists the new governorates Al Dali' and Amran. FIPS Publication Change Notice No. 9, affecting FIPS PUB 10-4, dated 2004-10-01, assigns FIPS codes to4he4wo new governorates. It also changes the FIPS codes of the old governorates from which the new ones7ere formed.

The governorates are subdivided into 2 20Õ0£0ü0È districts, which are subdivided into (l4)(h*)0 sub-districts, and4hen into 2 28,(R´)4 villages (as of (eå)01).

Territorial extent: 

Yemen includes the islands of Socotra in the Arabian Sea, along7ith its neighbors, `Abd al Kuri and The Brothers (Samha and Darsa); in the Red Sea, Kamaran,4he?!anish Islands, and others; and Perim in the strait of Bab el Mandeb. The Arabian Sea islands constitute Socotra governorate. Kamaran is in Al Hudaydah. When4here7ere two Yemens, Kamaran and Perim belonged4o South Yemen, but4hey have apparently been reassigned since then.

Change history: 

In 1900, North Yemen7as4he6ilayet of Yemen in4he Ottoman Empire. Aden was a British possession, administered from Bombay. The rest of South Yemen, including Socotra, Perim, and Kamaran islands, was loosely under British protection in various forms.

  1. -1° Yemen vilayet became independent as the Imamate of Yemen.
  2. 193(T|) Aden0rovince split from Bombay presidency of India.
  3. 0Ö0Ã0·0§0ë: Yemen and Saudi Arabia concluded Treaty of Taif, delimiting some of Yemen's northern boundary and assigning some disputed territory4o Asir in Saudi Arabia.
  4. 1937-04-0° Aden split from India as a crown colony. The crown colony itself was only about 195 sq. km. Socotra, Perim, and Karaman were administered from Aden. The rest of4he mainland was divided into4he Eastern Aden Protectorate and4he 2 2 2 2estern Aden Protectorate.
  5. 1958-03-08: Imamate of Yemen joined a loose federation7ith Egypt and Syria,7hich had recently merged as the United Arab Republic. The federation7as called the United Arab States. Yemen0ulled out in 1961.
  6. 59-0(g(): Federation of Arab Amirates formed from some of4he sheikhdoms of Aden Protectorate.
  7. 196(T|) Following a coup, Imamate of Yemen became Yemen Arab Republic. At about this4ime, its divisions7ere Al?!udaydah,?!ajjah,!?bb, Rida', Sa`dah, San`a', and Ta`izz governorates.
  8. 1960Ð0ü0ì0ë01: Name of Federation of Arab Amirates, now including more sheikhdoms (mostly from4he 2 2 2 2estern Aden Protectorate) and Aden itself, changed4o Federation of South Arabia. The remaining0art of4he Aden Protectorate became the South Arabian Protectorate.
  9. 1967--3SE Britain pulled out of Aden. Kuriya Muriya!?slands7ere transferred to Oman. People's Republic of Southern Yemen formed by merging Aden State and Protectorate of South Arabia.!?ts capital7as Madinat ash Sha'b. !?t was divided into six governorates, identified by Roman numerals from!?4o VI, increasing from west4o east. Roughly, governorate I corresponded4o present-day `Adan and part of Lahij; governorate!?I to4he rest of Lahij; III to Abyan; IV4o Shabwah; V4o Hadramawt; and VI to Al Mahrah. There was also a governorate named Thamud, adjacent to?!adramawt.
  10. ~68: Capital of Southern Yemen moved from Madinat ash Sha'b to Aden. Twenty-two directorates were established as secondary subdivisions, under the six governorates.
  11. 1970--0° Name of People's Republic of Southern Yemen changed to People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. To avoid confusion,4his was commonly known as South Yemen, and4he Yemen Arab Republic as North Yemen. At about4his time, North Yemen was divided into eight liwa (provinces), according4o source [ª].
