Dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine plus sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine versus either drug alone for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy: A double-blind, randomized, controlled phase 3 trial from Uganda

In a randomized clinical trial of two drug regimens for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp), Abel Kakuru and colleagues report that, unexpectedly, combining the two regimens did not result in fewer adverse birth outcomes than either regimen alone.

Perspective

A need for new tools for prevention of malaria in pregnancy

Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is a chemoprevention strategy against malaria in pregnancy. This Perspective highlights a recent PLOS Medicine study which demonstrates the need for better understanding of the mechanism by which IPTp-SP works, as well as novel measures to prevent malaria earlier in gestation.
