Hi! I was always working in Photoshop only, but now I’m gonna train in Illustrator, so I’m currently blue about it.

When you’re done with tracing something in Illustrator – how do you throw it to Photoshop? I mean – how do you save it in Illustrator (what file format, options) in cause to import/open it in Photoshop and polish?

P.S. Sorry if my english is hard-understanding, I’m from Poland and I don’t know the graphic terminology.

P.P.S. I can’t work out the size of the document in Illustrator, the work space of the document. I choose pixels as a unit, type a custom esolution ×ばつ768, but when the document appears I’m confused :). But I’ll work it out.

First off all I like all sites shown here, but, “Capture the Valley” site has one thing that I don’t like, and that is poorly marked links… don’t know about you, but it took me some time to click on the right text link. But hey, It’s just me. All the sites look awesome, especially webdesignerwall.com, it’s simple, fun to look at and to use.

Thanks for inclusion in this list, I love the other designs posted. Also I should mention that Web Designer Wall is such a stunning site itself. I worked hard to make Tickerville atypical looking in respect to other financial sites and it was fun to immerse myself in an earlier time period. I’m still learning a lot with CSS (I come from a Flash background), and my admiration for CSS grows with each experience I have with it. Also I’d like to say thank you to Stephen Slater (no web site to reference) who helped me with a lot of CSS advice and testing on Windows :)

The thing about these ‘Best of’ websites is all you ever get is a pretty thumbnail of the site in the gallery when I would like to know why the site was chosen to be featured in the first place.

Like this site, we see it in magazines and promoted in lots of places but what makes it so special? The cynic in me says it is more about the designers nepotism rather than anything else as this site gets on average 1 update every 2 weeks and the content is well ‘ok’. Understanding that comment is harsh the site itself has a good mix of CSS and artwork.

Back on topic, I visit Web Gallery now and then as well as other sites but what they all lack is a reason for the sites to be featured…what makes them special? I really wish there were comments by the webmaster on what the standout features of any particular site the feature in their gallery is, and what makes it special.

p.s. yes I understand there are some small comments under each thumbnail here, but I would sorely like to see a ‘best of’ site that made more of a feature of the stuff they are putting up there.

The above 50s are good and your design is awesome. I really like the casual cleanness, informal perfection and the random detailed design. If this list was extended to 51, I’d have put you somewhere in that list.

i honestly think the radiant plumbing site is pretty slick. who knew the topic of plumbing could be so cool looking?

Come on… Is there really a need to have the CSS-part in the title? Other than the fact that the list would be no good without it, as these are hardly the best of desing from 2007. There is nothing special about the CSS presented here whatsoever.

I’ve seen a lot of these around, for the past few weeks I’ve been browsing a few of these sites myself for ideas and insperation. That have a clarity and a lightness which my designs seem to lack.

I wish I could produce something mindblowing such as those designs…

Some of these sites dont even work in IE… not sure that is really great CSS design. Like it or not, a lot of people still use IE.

Also, 90% of these sites look similar to this site… but then again I guess no “best” list is completely unbiased. The list does have some nice sites though.

You guys need to get out more. Many of those sites (Veerle, Vivabit etc) have been untouched for a long time, and at least one of them is a blatant rip-off of another site. You’re spot on with a few of them, but giving Zeldman a nod is sort of obvious… I mean, *of course* Happy Cog has a good CSS-based website. Besides, didn’t they launch that design last year? Sheesh. :-)

(Props to I Love Typography, though and word to Viget. I know those guys.)

How can you not care about validation and web standards? Granted it may not be the top priority for some designers, but if it can be done in the space of a few minutes why not do it? It’s not like it’s hard or takes any extra effort.

I noticed you’re the guy behind ILT, which is cool as I subscribe to your site and read all the time, so just as an example let me put this out there.

Today I spent about an hour or more playing with and tweaking my logo for DTN, messing about with the kerning, and trying to sit the type on certain pixels vertically so that the aliasing appears cleaner to the user. I didn’t have to do this. 99.9% of people wouldn’t notice any difference. I did it because I believe if something can be improved, why not improve it? If webstandards are the standard, why not meet it?

Great post – there definitely is an uprising of nice, clean design with bold use of colour at the minute – especially since the introduction of css. It appears designers have now realised that making content easier to access rather than putting obstacles in their way actually increased satisfaction – of course, they have to look great as well.
