NuclearAbolitionDay.org was launched at the United Nations in Geneva on Friday last week (August 29) by a group of civil society organizations including PNND. NuclearAbolitionDay.org is a platform for civil society actions and events for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (‘Nuclear Abolition Day’) which is commemorated on September 26.

Academy Award winning actor Michael Douglas, who also serves as a UN Peace Messenger, received a standing ovation at the 6th Conference of Speakers of Parliaments at the United Nations in Geneva following his 25 minute keynote speech on the topic "A world in turmoil: Parliamentary cooperation and multilateralism for peace, justice and prosperity for all."

On July 23, PNND Co-President Senator Ed Markey and House Representative Ro Khanna introduced the Invest in Children Before Missiles (ICBM) Act in the United States Congress. The legislation would redirect funding from the Sentinel nuclear Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) program to the U.S. Department of Education.
This follows legislation introduced by Senator Markey on July 16, the 80th anniversary of the first nuclear test, to Halt and Reverse the Nuclear Arms Race.

From June 19-21, 2025, the Rome Parliament hosted the Second Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue: Strengthening trust and embracing hope for our common future. The conference was organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Religions for Peace. PNND promoted nuclear disarmament and the Pact for the Future.

PNND Member Hon Ms Rabea Abouras MP (Libya) presents nine recommendations on behalf of PNND to the States Parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) meeting at the United Nations in New York. Ms Abouras also highlights the need for credible security assurances to countries that relinquish nuclear deterrence/programs.

PNND and our program partner World Future Council, joined over 700 parliamentarians meeting in Tashkent for the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, April 5-9, 2025. We were invited to present the winning policies of the 2024 World Future Policy Award on Peace and Future Generations to a plenary of the assembly, and to speak as experts in workshops on parliamentary diplomacy, mediation and weapons of mass destruction.

In response, PNND has joined with eight other organizations in submitting a paper to UNODA on The UN Pact for the Future: Nuclear weapons spending and the Sustainable Development Goals in a turbulent world.
