When the swallows begin to head south, geese arrive to take their place. They arrive from the far off Kamchatka Peninsula in Siberia to winter in Japan, leaving with the arrival of spring. As Sei Shonagon wrote in "The Pillow Book", the sight of geese flying in formation high in the sky is majestic and graceful, and has a special place in the Japanese heart.
