We are the joint International Max-Planck Research School (IMPRS) on Astrophysics of

  • the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE)
  • the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA)
  • the University Observatory Munich at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU/USM)
  • the European Southern Observatory (ESO)

Together, we form one of the largest centers of astrophysical research in the world, covering every subject from planets, stars, and galaxies to cosmology. Access to the world's largest telescopes and a stimulating scientific environment provide our students with the ideal conditions for their PhD research.

PhD Position Announcement

We are offering about 25 PhD positions for research topics in various fields of astrophysics with in the IMPRS program. The deadline to apply for IMPRS PhD positions is November 1 every year for the program starting in September of the following year.


Our next application round starts beginning of August, 2026 for the program starting in September 2027. Therefore, the online application portal is temporarily closed but will become available in August 2026. We can notify you as soon as the application portal will be open again. Please send us your email address with a short note that we should enter your name and email on our notification list.

  • The IMPRS Application Round 2025/26 is closed!
    Thank you to all interested applicants who have sent their documents within the set time frame! We will now review the application materials. Successful applicants who make it onto the shortlist will receive an invitation to the recruitment workshop from us in mid-December.

  • 25year IMPRS on Astrophysics
    On September 18, our IMPRS on Astrophysics Graduate School celebrated its 25th anniversary. At the ceremony, representatives from the participating institutes MPE, MPA, ESO, and USM, from the MPG General Administration, as well as students and alumni spoke about the significance and successes of our IMPRS School. Afterwards, a reception was held to toast to the next 25 years.


  • We welcome all our new IMPRS students!
    On September 16 + 17, 2025 our IMPRS Introductory Workshop for the group of 29 new students took place to introduce them to the program and the facilities of our four IMPRS institutes MPA, MPE, ESO, LMU/USM.

    Dr. María Teresa Valdivia-Mena, IMPRS student in 2020-2024, has recently been awarded with an Otto Hahn Medal AND the Otto Hahn Award.
