Change Google Calendar notifications

To stay informed about your events, you can change or set up your notification settings. You get these notifications:

  • On your phone
  • In your web browser
  • By email

You can change your notification settings for just one event or for many events.

Tip: You won't get notifications for flights or reservations that Gmail adds.

Learn how to turn notifications on or off

You can get event notifications:

  • By email: You get the updates in your email.
  • As desktop notifications: When your calendar is open, these pop up outside your web browser.
  • As alerts: They show up within your Google Calendar window.

Tip: If you don’t use Calendar, you get emails when someone creates, updates, or deletes an event you’re invited to.

Turn notifications on or off for all events

Important:

  • To change the settings, you need to open Calendar in a web browser, like Chrome or Safari.
  • If you're asked to let "calendar.google.com" show notifications, you need to allow it.

To change how notifications work for all your events:

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top right, click Settings menu Settings and then Settings.
    1. On the left, under "General," click Notification settings.
    2. Under "Notification settings," you can:
      • Turn notifications on or off: Click the Notifications drop-down and select how you want to receive notifications.
      • Adjust the timing of snoozed notifications: Turn on "Desktop notifications," then click Show snoozed notifications and customize your timing.
      • Only get notifications if you respond "Yes" or "Maybe" to an event: Click the box next to "Notify me only if I have responded Yes or Maybe."

Tip: You can get snooze notifications only on Chrome browser. If you have many notification times for the same event, the Snooze option shows only on the last one.

Turn notifications on or off for one event

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. Click the event and then Edit event .
  3. Next to Notifications :
    • To edit your notifications: Choose if you want to receive a notification or an email. You can change how often you want to get alerts in advance.
    • To add another type of notification: Click Add notification.
    • To remove a notification: Click Remove Remove.
  4. At the top, click Save.

Tip: You can get notifications through email, desktop alert, or both. Any changes you make are only for you.

Turn notifications on or off for specific calendars

To change how notifications work for specific calendars you own:

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar.
  2. At the top right, click Settings menu Settings and then Settings.
  3. On the left, under "Settings for my calendars," click the calendar you want to change and then Calendar settings.
  4. Under "Event notifications" and "All-day event notifications:"
    • To edit your notifications: Choose if you want to receive a notification or an email. You can change how often you want to get alerts in advance.
    • To add another type of notification: Click Add notification.
    • To remove a notification: Click Remove notification Remove.

Fix issues when Calendar notifications don't work

If you don’t get event notifications, update your browser settings to allow Google Calendar to send notifications. You should also make sure that:

  • Notifications for your calendar are on. Follow the steps above to check.
  • Your browser can show notifications. If not, turn on desktop notifications.
  • Google Calendar is still open in your web browser.

Google Chrome

  1. On your computer, open Google Chrome Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then Settings.
  3. Click Privacy and security and then Site settings and then Notifications.
  4. Next to "Allowed to send notifications," click Add.
  5. In the "Site" field, enter "calendar.google.com".
  6. Click Add.

Other browsers

Important: For the exact instructions, check the support site of your browser:

  1. On your computer, open your web browser.
  2. Go to your browser’s notification preferences.
  3. Add permissions for calendar.google.com.

Tip: If you have a work or school account, your admin can make changes to events on your calendar. When they make changes, you don't get a notification.
