<h2>What's Wrong with YouTube</h2>

<dt>Normal use of YouTube involves running nonfree software.</dt>
<dd>
<p>The (追記ここまで) YouTube (追記) video player (追記ここまで) is a (削除) peculiar case. As of September 2020, it is possible (削除ここまで)
(追記) <a href="/philosophy/javascript-trap.html">nonfree JavaScript
program</a>. Some videos also require the nonfree Adobe DRM software
that has been incorporated into proprietary browsers and Firefox, but
not into the GNU browsers, including
<a href="/software/icecat">IceCat</a>.</p>
<p id="free-access">However, there are ways (追記ここまで) to watch YouTube videos
without running any nonfree (削除) software, even coming
in (削除ここまで) (追記) software:</p>
<ul>
<li><p><em><a href="https://invidious.io/">Invidious</a> intermediary
sites</em>. Some of them allow visits (追記ここまで) via Tor, (削除) via some (削除ここまで) (追記) or even have an onion
URL. As (追記ここまで) of (追記) 2025, (追記ここまで) the (削除) “Invidious” intermediary sites.</p>
<p>
We recommend using LibreJS with them. The Invidious sites (削除ここまで) (追記) instances that (追記ここまで) are (削除) not
all alike: some won't let you (削除ここまで) (追記) listed (追記ここまで) in (削除) without nonfree Javascript code.
Also, while most of (削除ここまで) the (削除) JavaScript code on those sites carries (削除ここまで) (追記) Invidious
documentation try to keep AI crawlers away with (追記ここまで) a (削除) free
license, there (削除ここまで) (追記) JavaScript CAPTCHA
program. This program (追記ここまで) is (削除) one file, handlers.js, which does not. (削除ここまで) (追記) free, but we recommend enabling the (追記ここまで) LibreJS (削除) will
prevent its execution, and watching videos still works.</p>
<p>
There is also (削除ここまで)
(追記) add-on as a matter of precaution, should they use (追記ここまで) a (追記) nonfree program in
the future.</p></li>
<li><p><em>The (追記ここまで) free (削除) add-on for Firefox, called ViewTube, that (削除ここまで) (追記) <a href="http://sebaro.pro/viewtube/">ViewTube</a>
add-on</em>, which (追記ここまで) permits direct access to (削除) watch (削除ここまで) videos on (削除) YouTube. (削除ここまで) (追記) YouTube in
various browsers. (追記ここまで) It is preinstalled in (削除) the (削除ここまで) GNU (削除) browser, (削除ここまで) IceCat, and you can load
it into Firefox. (削除) The free
program youtube-dl is also available; it gets data out of the site's
JavaScript code but doesn't run that code. (削除ここまで) But youtube.com is likely to block (削除) these (削除ここまで) (追記) this (追記ここまで) means of
access if you come via (削除) Tor.</p>
<p>
As (削除ここまで) (追記) Tor.</p></li>
</ul>
</dd>
<dt>YouTube tries to stop people from downloading copies.</dt>
<dd>
<p>The nonfree JavaScript code does not allow browsers to save (追記ここまで) a (削除) result (削除ここまで) (追記) copy,
even when the video is under a license that allows redistribution.
This is a form (追記ここまで) of (削除) these (削除ここまで) (追記) DRM that can't even pretend to “enforce
copyright.”</p>
<p>As for the mobile app, which is nonfree as well, it graciously
<a href="https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7381437">lets
paying Premium users store videos for up to 30 days</a>, after which
it deletes those copies. These are stored with DRM, meaning
they can only be played inside the app, and cannot be
played from external software or transferred to an external device.</p>
<p>However, some free programs bypass this block:</p>
<ul>
<li><p><em><a href="https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases">
yt-dlp</a></em>, which in spite of being hosted on GitHub can be
downloaded with a browser without running JavaScript. It can also be
downloaded from the command line. For example:</p>
<p class="emph-box"><kbd>$ curl -L https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases/download/2025.05.22/yt-dlp_linux -o yt-dlp</kbd></p>
</li>
<li><p>The <em>ViewTube</em> add-on.</p></li>
</ul>
</dd>
<dt>Free/libre (追記ここまで) access (削除) methods, (削除ここまで) (追記) methods may not work in the future.</dt>
<dd>
<p>As a result of the <a href="#free-access">access methods</a> above, (追記ここまで)
posting videos on YouTube does not currently put them off limits to the
free world. That is good, and we hope it lasts, but we cannot count on
them to keep working. The (追記) ViewTube (追記ここまで) add-on broke once in 2019 because
of some change in YouTube. That time, a corrected add-on was released
after a few weeks. Next time, who knows? Thus, posting on YouTube is
a fragile solution unless/until Google commits to supporting libre
access.</p>
(削除) <p>
Please (削除ここまで)
(追記) <p>If nevertheless you do post a video on YouTube, please (追記ここまで) don't use
the host name youtube.com (or its aliases) to refer to (削除) a video on YouTube. (削除ここまで) (追記) it. (追記ここまで) Instead,
refer to one of the Invidious intermediary sites that accepts visits
via Tor (test it!). That is fail-safe: if anything breaks, your link
will fail, rather than lead people to run nonfree software.</p>

<div class="column-limit"></div> (追記ここまで)
<p>One thing about YouTube that is <em>not</em> a moral strike against
it is nonfree software on YouTube servers—if there is any. We
as possible users of YouTube can't tell whether the servers run any
nonfree software, because that has no effect on us—therefore
it doesn't do any wrong to us.</p>
<p>If there are any nonfree programs running on YouTube servers, they
mistreat Google by denying Google control of that aspect of its
computing. We hope that Google will reclaim its freedom by ceasing to
use those nonfree programs, if any. But those programs do not mistreat
the <em>users</em> of YouTube, so they are not a reason to refuse
to <em>use</em> that service.</p>
<p>It is also possible that all the software running on YouTube
servers is free—either published free software or private
unreleased free software.</p>
