Welcome to the Castillo Lab.

Our goal is to generate information and technologies to encourage efficient management of resources and resiliency of grassland agriculture. Forages and grasslands play a key role supporting pasture-based livestock systems and providing multiple ecosystem services to society. We focus on applied and basic approaches to understand plant-animal-soil interactions in the environment.

Ongoing research is focused on, but not limited to:

  • Frost-seeding legumes in tall fescue pastures.
  • Stockpiling forages.
  • Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as a tool for rapid determination of plant-, soil-, and animal-responses.
  • Assessment of silvopastoral systems in the Peruvian Amazon (website Silvopastures Peru).
  • Nutrient management and utilization of biosolids, swine effluent, poultry litter, and biochar as fertilizers for forage and bioenergy production.
