ti-83 errors

We're glad you came by, but you might find what you're looking for elsewhere.

TI-Basic Developer is not the site it once was. While its information on commands and other calculator features remains almost second-to-none, its forum, archives, and even hosting service, Wikidot, have been decaying for years. The calculator community would love to see what you're working on, or help you in your next coding adventure, but TI-Basic Developer is no longer the place to do it.

Instead, you should head over to Cemetech (primarily American) or TI-Planet (primarily international). Both are active, well-established forums with their own archives, chatrooms, reference material, and abundant coding tools and resources. We'll see you there, we hope.

Were you doing assembly programming to mess with the variables?

i don't have a ti-83 plus, just a ti-83.

i was messing around with a weird behavior i found. so if i were to type

"Str1Str2Str3

on the home screen when none of the string variables are defined and pressed ENTER, then i get a random-looking string of commands and stuff. i discovered that i could add other undefined variables, and that would result in the random string being longer. so a bit later i put a bunch of undefined variables in the string, then i scrolled through the mess, and sometime after the thing looped, i pressed ENTER. what happened was odd. the calculator froze, then the screen went blank with the words "RAM FAIL" displayed.

on a side note: i later found out that pressing the "Y=" button instead of ENTER seems to have a different result. that and where in the mess of commands i press ENTER or "Y=" affects what happens, and if i scroll left after the loop, i can sometimes crash the calculator. twice i got a screen full of charecters i didn't know were in the ti-83, like greek letters, a hash symbol(#), and letters from other languages. too bad it always comes before a freeze

I don't know. I tried to see if my TI-83+ would exhibit any behavior like that, but it doesn't. I also couldn't find anything on that error you got. Also, does your calculator still work after that?

well, the thing with undefined variables started after i crashed my ti-83 while playing with that trick that gets the arrow thing in a string. i tried to get another arrow into Str1 and the calculator threw an UNDEFINED error, but Str1 was already defined, so i pressed the "Y=" button. then the calculator crashed. and if i understand your question, yes, it does. i can do it many times in a row and it would still be fine.

Well, that is pretty interesting, but I'm afraid I can't with certainty explain it. My hypothesis is that altering the character set to include the "arrow thing" in a string didn't work completely and messed up the whole string system, causing a few errors to occur when the calculator worked with certain characters in strings.

interesting theory. if only there was a way to get any character into a string.

I really don't know what is going on. I could not get my Ti-83 plus to exhibit any behavior like that.

A few things you can try

-Download Latest OS

-Clear all Ram

-Reset Calc

Hope you can get it figured out!

Ok, one more thing to try. You can try self-test mode. I believe that this will clear either all ram or all memory.

Click [mode] [alpha] [ln] [enter]

It will test the pixels and I believe it will run other tests too

You can. You just need Celtic III and a program I made.
You can get it here on Cemetech. https://www.cemetech.net/downloads/files/2035/x2126

i don't know if this would help, but the "mess of random-looking commands and other stuff" is this

*row(8▶DecR▶Pθ(Eng(QuadReg IndepntAskprod(fMax(}Scatter▶Dec0pxl-Test(DependAutoprod(randM(3Q1coshֿ1(▶DMS8DispGraphDependAutoprod(sinh( xor *row(*row(*row(Clrdrawsinhֿ1(7sinhֿ1(For▶DMS

after that last command it "jumps"(for a lack of a better term) to the beginning.
when it loops, then you know that pressing ENTER or "Y=" will start the craziness. if you press a button that takes you to a menu, like PRGM or MODE, then the affect will be different.

And that is a crash.

Crashes on calculators when something doesn't go right, and have odd results. (like a RAM clear or a sudden turn-off)
