SCP-5514 and the Serpent enter battle stances.

I’ve never been happier. Fantastic mecha kaiju battles on the wiki! This weeb is so happy

If you are not listening to THIS and grinning like a madman the whole time while reading it, you are reading this wrong.

Also, stephlynch stephlynch , do you take commissions? Because those are some kickass images.

thanks!

i do take commissions, but i'm also willing to do images for free provided that it's for something SCP related, it's tenable under my current skillset, and if you can sell me on the idea

What a fantastic and intense end to the series. You've, imo managed to justify the mecha in-universe extremely well - I loved the notion of it taking the mantle of the Dragonslayer, and I am so thankful for that, as it allowed me to enjoy the action throughout this article without reservations. The team up with the serpent was wonderfully done as well, and a really interesting way to develop the plot.

The article was a great ride.
I have a lot of minor nitpicks though; I don't have time to do a full review but a couple that stood out:
- Wake-02 was never described. The mention of it having a caudal fin was a bit jarring, since all the previously-seen kaiju seem to be croctopus-like.
- 5514 flies into sub-orbit and knocks an LSA "into the air", but sub-orbit is above the atmosphere.

novoting for now

To address your first concern: I recommend reading 5391, the first piece in this series.

Right you are! I've been headcanoning the Kaiju Sea 5-arm after reading the APOCALYPSE series.
I'm going to hold off the upvote until I have time to go through the series more thoroughly.

instead creating and controlling an independent gravity field. The origin of this flaw is unknown and investigation could potentially cause it to stop functioning

This is awesome

Targets are made dramatically3 more heavy

I don't understand the footnote here at all.

not significantly lower the mass or density of SCP-5514 while drastically lowering the material weight

Those makes 3 gravity/weight anomalies, one of which is a total mystery; I think that sounds exceptionally dangerous. I also don

Entire twenty-meter long blade forged from cold iron provided by the Hy-Brasil Royal Court, with a handle built around the blade without forging.

"Forged" is used twice there, in apparent contradiction: they forged the blade, why not the handle? I'd recommend "cold worked" or "cold forged", but both sort of conflict with "cold iron".

Seven poets constantly writing and reciting poems about the defeat and death of large monsters, broadcasted at high volume

I was definitely expecting this to be foundation-ese for "we hired a heavy metal band" or "we're paying someone to rap battle the monsters". I don't find the Thousand Word Arrows' 70 words very demoralizing.

After a near breach, SCP-5514 was dispatched

The LSAs aren't contained to begin with, right? What's being breached?

Dr. Kaori: I've seen these before, near Site-41.

Remembering antimemetics, especially 3125? The crosslink to the hub definitely in the right place at the beginning of the encounter, though.

Captain Rosales: Understood. Increasing Weight Sink Integrity

Why wouldn't it already be at max integrity? Integrity sounds like a thing that shouldn't be adjustable except by being hit.

SCP-5514 is only to be deployed in emergency situations at the request of the Overseer Council.

Can it still be deployed? It's unclear how much damage it took when it opened the sun-vent; on my initial read I assumed it would basically destroy the mech from the inside.

Also, it seems odd that foundation is calling an LSA "the Serpent" in an SCP document, rather than a codename/provisional designation/etc.

While I do like this a lot, it lacks polish enough that I'm going to downvote, and revisit after the contest.

Long post! -Riemann

I don't understand the footnote here at all.

The mech is using 'pataphysics as a way to attack targets. When it makes a target dramatically more heavy, it makes them take up more weight in the story and gives them narrative weight. The editors note clarifies that this isn't unclinical tone, but a literal description of what's going on.

"Forged" is used twice there, in apparent contradiction: they forged the blade, why not the handle? I'd recommend "cold worked" or "cold forged", but both sort of conflict with "cold iron".

A good point, I'll be replacing the first "forged" when the contest wraps up.

The LSAs aren't contained to begin with, right? What's being breached?

The LSAs almost breach a Site while trying to break into it.

Can it still be deployed? It's unclear how much damage it took when it opened the sun-vent; on my initial read I assumed it would basically destroy the mech from the inside.

It's badly damaged, but the Foundation is going to try and repair it.

Also, it seems odd that foundation is calling an LSA "the Serpent" in an SCP document, rather than a codename/provisional designation/etc.

The Serpent is an ally of the Foundation and the 'leader' of both the Serpent's Hand and the Wanderer's Library. Yes, it is anomalous, but it is referred to with respect. If it had a name, it would be referred to as that, but it doesn't.

To some degree, it is odd, but it's intentionally so. The Serpent is meant to be set apart from the rest of the things that the Foundation is fighting.

There’s just too much going on this article that distracts from the cool parts — the meeting transcript in particular is numbingly dull — and the sheer number of Cool Weapons and Armor and Things packed into the giant robot end up blending into each other in action sequences that are gimped by clinical tone. Most grievously, the really cool parts like 5514 dropping into the sea or killing the crocosquid by venting the star are ripped unashamedly from Pacific Rim, while the Serpent is a Deus ex Machina that didn’t show up nearly often enough in the series to be cathartic rather than clumsy.

Nice job! Installing SCP-037 inside is a pretty cool way to provide powers to your mech, and the Beowulf Sigurd Railguns remind me of the Gravity Enhanced Railguns that the GOC used to fight the original Cetus. Are those a reference?

Minor Quibble, but these lines:

Captain Rosales: A giant robot. We've been working on it for years and it is currently eating the majority of our budget.
Madam al Fine: Why the hell is that going to work?

Stood out to me a bit, because the GOC already have giant mechs to punch things in some of their stories, so I feel like they would more readily accept the solution of punching stuff.

Overall, I think enjoyed this even more than the last one.

The Beowulf-Sigurd Rails were not intended to be a reference, actually. I guess I just tend to certain tropes when retreading similar ground. Making unique weapons to fight a kaiju can go into similar places.

Stood out to me a bit, because the GOC already have giant mechs to punch things in some of their stories, so I feel like they would more readily accept the solution of punching stuff.

A good point. However, I'm going to go with the lazy answer: not in this canon.

O5-1: The Hy-Brasil International Security Agreement of 1992 stipulates that in event of an MH-Class Scenario, the Coalition, the Foundation and Hy-Brasil are to put aside all differences in order to stop the end of the world.

I think this doesn't need to be said directly. The reader and General Rockefeller have enough context outside of this sentence to understand what the Agreement is about.

Otherwise cool fights and solid series. + 1

I don't know about this one. On the other hand, I enjoyed the action, although the dialogue was cheesy. However, the interview log was extremely boring, Idk how you can make it better, but if it felt like a slog.

And back to the action, though at some parts I fully enjoying it. Though, in some parts, it didn't get that interesting, especially at the end where they use their heart to kill the enemy. But that was a cool image to imagine.
