NONLINEAR DYNAMICS AND TURBULENCE

  • Abstract

The onset of turbulence and the description of a fully developed turbulence are a fundamental problem. In recent years the study of chaotic motion shows that the deterministic system can lead to irregular chaotic motions. Therefore the research of chaos is very important to explaining turbulence. The chaotic turbulent-like behaviour is sensitive to initial conditions and unpredictable after long time. The behaviour of nonlinear dissipative systems is very complex, and can be divided into steady attractor, periodic attractor,quasi-periodic attractor, and strange attractor. The topological property of attractors may change as a controlling parameter crosses bifurcation points. In general, the turbulence would appear after a few bifurcations.
