Sponge city is an urban water purification system which uses sponge-like technology to absorb, restore, drain and purify water when it rains, then release water when needed to cope with environmental challenges and natural hazards. Traditional urban development is usually extensive and destructive, while a sponge city has quite a small impact on the surrounding environment, therefore a sponge city is called low impact design and development (LID).
