Apart from everything that John Hopkins already pointed out, it is worth to mention, that if the net has played any specific role in this case whatsoever, it played also a role in the scandal to happen. And again it is a question of speed. Publication processes, especially if they deal with hot topics in the life sciences are getting faster, and especially, the transmission of results from the esoteric core of the scientists to a wider public, through mass media. Nowadays, it only takes a few days if not hours for hot results after they announced in scientific journals until they are published (sometimes, they are even announced without getting peer reviewed) in the mass media and the blogosphere. And only there it is possible that so much fuss is made about a fraud paper.
