To further introduce renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which have the characteristic of power generation being influenced by weather conditions, significant strengthening of the power system is required under conventional technologies and regulations. However, this process involves substantial costs and land acquisition, and takes a long time, making it a challenging task.
In this project, to make the most of existing systems, NEDO will focus on the early realization of non-firm connections.* This involves the development of individual system prediction and control systems, as well as the development of optimal control technologies for addressing challenges such as voltage and power flow variations in the distribution system. Additionally, efforts will be directed toward establishing a decentralized network system.
* Non-firm connection: A method that allows the connection of new power sources, assuming control of output during congested periods when other power sources are operational.
NEDO will develop the control systems to realize Japanese version of “Connect & Manage," including "non-firm connections" which flexibly utilizes the available capacity of existing systems and allows connections to the system under certain conditions.
NEDO will develop power flow monitoring and voltage control technologies for the distribution system, considering future demand activation and the progress of self-consumption. NEDO will implement technology development to appropriately transmit information from the distribution system to the upper-level extra-high voltage system.
NEDO will implement the necessary technology development to avoid power quality issues such as voltage flicker and voltage imbalance while maintaining proper voltage in situation where a large amount of renewable energy is introduced into the distribution system.
