Japan and the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) organize the side event at the 31st session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (May 16, 2022).

On May 16, 2022, Japan and the UNODC hosted the side event at the hybrid meeting of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), in Vienna, Austria.
The side event’s theme was "A Multifaceted Approach to Turning the Kyoto Declaration(*) into Action on the Ground", and the event was held in order to take stock of and report on the initiatives launched since the adoption of the Kyoto Declaration in March, 2021, and also to exchange views on the significance of the Kyoto Declaration and the initiatives to be taken to turn it into action.
After Mr. HIKIHARA Takeshi, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nation in Vienna, who presided over the 31st session of the CCPCJ, made his opening remarks, Mr. TSUSHIMA Jun, State Minister of Justice of Japan, made a key note speech.
State Minister TSUSHIMA noted that under the Kyoto Declaration, it was a great achievement for the international community to jointly confirm the importance of the “rule of law” and mutual cooperation , and that such unity is all the more important in the current situation facing a unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force. He was confident that the importance of this achievement was becoming ever clearer today.
After that, Ms. SHIBATA Noriko, Assistant Vice-Minister of Justice explained the status of the initiatives being taken by Japan to achieve the objectives under the Kyoto Declaration. In addition, a panel discussion was held, and the members of the panel agreed that the international community would strive to turn the Kyoto Declaration into action.
