Sixth Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting Held

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) held the Sixth Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting, as a part of Tokyo GX week, on September 25, 2023.
As the result of the meeting, the chair released the chair's summary, focusing on setting the amount of global hydrogen demand target, creation of new industries and new jobs through the utilization of hydrogen, acceleration of the development of international standards and certification schemes based on carbon intensity, and acceleration of financial support in emerging countries.

4. Key outcomes
With the participation of 23 governments and international organizations, the Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting issued the chair's summary regarding the following towards the acceleration and steady implementation of the Tokyo Statement and the Global Action Agenda:
- Participants shared the additional global goals to increase hydrogen demand which could potentially reach 150 million ton by 2030, with up to 90 million ton being demand for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen.
- Further expansion of hydrogen utilization will be a breakthrough in achieving decarbonization and is expected to create new industries such as electrolysis and other hydrogen production as well as new jobs of close to 800,000 by 2030, thereby contributing to sustainable global growth.
- Participants, including those other than G7 members, shared the need to accelerate the development of international standards and certification schemes based on carbon intensity and the concept of carbon intensity.
- Participants shared the need to further expand hydrogen utilization by accelerating financial support in emerging countries and facilitating private investment in collaboration with the World Bank and other financial institutions.
