Research, Specimens, and Materials at the Kahaku

The National Museum of Nature and Science is a national comprehensive science museum focused on Japan's natural history and the history of science and technology. Research, specimens, and materials in diverse fields such as zoology, botany, geology and paleontology, anthropology, and science form the core of the museum's work.

As a research institution for Japan's natural history and the history of science and technology, the National Museum of Nature and Science conducts research in a wide variety of fields.

In addition to its Ueno Main Building, the National Museum of Nature and Science also has research facilities in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, known as the "Tsukuba Research Departments." Additionally, parts of the Tsukuba Botanical Garden and the Affiliated Nature Education Garden are also open to the public.

There are four research divisions, three centers, and a research materials library dedicated to research in natural history and the history of science and technology.

The National Museum of Nature and Science employs researchers specializing in natural history and the history of science and technology, and conducts surveys and research in collaboration with various institutions.

As part of our research activities, we host symposiums and conferences. It serves as an important forum for sharing and discussing the latest scientific findings and insights.
