Title:"Low Fertiliy in Historical Perspective"

Massimo Livi-Bacci is Professor of Demography at University of Florence, Italy, since 1966. He held various important positions including visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and President of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). He is one of the most renowned researchers on history of European and the world population. Especially, his book titled "A Concise History of World Population"(1997) is widely read as textbooks for undergraduate and graduate students in Europe and the US. Currently, he is a member of the Senate, of the Italian National Academy, and also a honorary member of the Japan Academy.

Professor Livi-Bacci covers wide range of topics in demography. For this lecture, he will discuss about the low fertility - the common issue shared among developed countries - from historical and international perspectives. Italy is one of the countries with strong "familism" as in Japan, also faced with very low fertiliy. The historical, social and cultural contexts in Western industrialized countries may provide us with some important implications for the future research on fertility and family in Japan.
