The State Of JavaScript 2024

The 2024 State of JavaScript Survey was conducted between November 13 and December 10 2024 and the results are already out. The survey should possibly be renamed to refer to TypeScript - but remember it covers the entire JS ecosystem.

It's only six months since I reported on the 2023 State of JavaScript Survey, but this was explained in the email sent out announcing the availability of the 2024 results:

Last year it took us 183 days between collecting the State of JS 2023 data and publishing the results. This year, we got it down to 6 days!

There were 14,015 responses to the 2024 survey compared to 23,540 in 2023 and 39,472 in 2022 but the results painted a very similar picture in important respects. So, in 2024, 95% used JavaScript in a professional capacity and 40% as a hobby, compared to 91% and 37% the previous year. However, only 10% used it as a student down from 12% the previous year.

The Use Case distribution in 2024 was very similar to that in 2023, with 98% of respondents using JavaScript for Frontend Development in both years. This year 64% using it for Backend Development, down from 69% in 2023. In both years just over a quarter of respondents used JavaScript for Mobile Apps, around a fifth for Desktop Apps and 6% for Game development.In 2024, 14% of respondents used it for data visualization and 11% for graphics and animation compared to 16% and 12% in 2023..

The strong trend towards the use of TypeScript continued in 2024 with 67% of respondents stating that they write more TypeScript code than JavaScript code. Indeed over a third of respondents used Typescipt exclusively compared to only 8% never using Typescript:

A new question in the 2024 survey asked "What proportion of the code you produce is AI-generated?" and it revealed that 20% of respondents never use AI to produce code and less than 15% used AI to generate code more than half the time:

In his Introduction to the results Sacha Grief notes that 2024's top three Front End frameworks were all launched a decade ago. React tops the poll, used by over 80% of respondents and with almost half of respondents being Positive about it. In second place, Vue is used by just over half with over 40% expressing Positive sentiment towards it. Angular is used by almost the same proportion but less than a quarter of users are positive about it. However, as this change over time visualization about reveals, this represents rising popularity in 2024.
