Using the content

The content made available on this website unless otherwise stated is subject to the Public Data License (Version 1.0) (PDL1.0).

The following are examples of the descriptions in PDL 1.0 that are individual regulations.

1) Source citation

  1. The user must cite the source when using the content. Please refer to the following examples for how to cite the sources.

* When using the content in an academic paper or book, and so forth, you must give source citation in an appropriate manner set forth in the journal’s rules.

  1. If the user has edited the content for use, you must include a statement expressing that the content has been edited, in addition to the abovementioned source citation. Please refer to the following examples. The edited information must not be published or used in such a way that it could be misconstrued as if it had been created by GSI.

  • Created by Company YY based on XX data (GSI) (URL of the relevant page)

2) No infringement of third party rights

  1. If a third party holds rights to a part of the content, said fact may be directly or indirectly stated or indicated through source citations, but in some cases the part of the content to which the third party holds the rights may not be clear or may not be explicitly stated. It is the responsibility of the user to confirm the rights pertaining to use of the content. The following are examples of the content to which the third party holds the rights:
  • Example: Analysis results of SAR
Analysis results of SAR are analyzed by GSI. Raw data of ALOS is owned by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and that of ALOS-2 and ALOS-4 is owned by JAXA. When citing analysis results of SAR, it must be given as follows:
- ALOS: "Analysis by GSI from ALOS raw data of JAXA, METI"
- ALOS-2: "Analysis by GSI from ALOS-2 raw data of JAXA"
- ALOS-4: "Analysis by GSI from ALOS-4 raw data of JAXA"
  • Example: Articles in the Report of the Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Prediction
With regard to articles in the Report of the Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Prediction, copyright on each article is held by the respective author. If you reprint or copy the content in the report beyond the scope of citation, approval from the copyright holder is required. For application procedures and other inquiries, please contact the Secretariat of the Coordinating Committee for Earthquake Prediction.
  • Example: Active Fault Map or Active Fault Map in Urban Area
If you use Active Fault Map or Active Fault Map in Urban Area, you must specify surveyors’ name.
Example) Okada, A., Hirouchi, D., Matsuta, N., Miyauchi, T. (2017) , 1:25000 Active Fault Map in Urban Area "NAKATSUGAWA" , GSI
  • Example: The content of GSI maps (including tile data) that are indicated as being from other organizations

  1. The user must comply with the terms and conditions of the source provider for the content obtained through API (Application Programming Interface) links to external databases, etc. The following is an example of the content which is obtained through API links to external databases, etc.
  • Example: The content of GSI maps (including tile data) that are indicated as being from other organizations

3) The content where use is restricted by specific laws and ordinances

Use of some part of the content may be restricted by specific laws and ordinances. Please refer to the respective laws and ordinances for details.
  • Example: Application for duplication or use of Basic Survey Results based on the Survey Act (in Japanese)
  • Example: Regarding the application for duplication or use of Public Survey Results based on the Survey Act, you must obtain approval from the Survey Planning Organization that has developed the concerned Survey Results. With regard to the results developed by GSI, approval from GSI is needed. For further details, please confirm to the Survey Planning Organization concerned.
  • Example: “Browsing Service of Control Points Survey Results” (in Japanese) and so forth as prescribed in Article 27 (3) and Article 42 (1) of the Survey Act are provided to browse Survey Results and Survey Records. Descriptions of Control Points in Survey Records are not available other than browsing because they include retained personal information as prescribed in Article 69 of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information.

4) The content where the Terms of Use does not apply

The following contents are not subject to the Terms of Use or are subject to other terms of use.
  1. The content where the Terms of Use does not apply
    Symbol Mark, Logo, and Character Design which represent the organization or specific business.
  2. The content where other terms of use apply
    If terms of use are set for software (programs) provided in downloadable form, such terms of use shall apply.
