Publish Open Access
Open Access Guidance for publishing with the Geological Society
The Geological Society champions open access publishing for both books and journals, offering a range of flexible options to maximise the reach and impact of your research. We support full and hybrid (mixed open access and subscription-based) models and participate in Read and Publish agreements with numerous institutions worldwide.
Our book series including Special Publications, Memoirs, and Engineering Geology Special Publications, all provide avenues for open access publishing at both the chapter and book level. For researchers prioritising fully open access, our GeoHorizons series is dedicated exclusively to this model.
Publish Geological Research Open Access

Open access publishing provides free, immediate, online access to geological research, such as journal articles and books. Open access content is available to anyone with an internet connection, without any access fees or restrictions, furthering the Society's mission to advance geoscience knowledge and understanding.

The APC payable features on the open access agreements page. Payment must be received prior to online publication.
Green open access
Authors may post a copy of the accepted (i.e. post-peer review but pre-copyedited) version of their article, accompanied by a link to the relevant article abstract on the Lyell Collection, in their institutional repository, a subject-based repository or personal website after the relevant embargo period has passed. The embargo period is 12 months from formal online publication on the Lyell Collection, unless otherwise agreed. Under no circumstances may the publisher's final version (e.g. PDF) be posted under the terms of Green Open Access.
