MIL-STD-462 Testing & EMC Services

Reliable EMC testing is essential in demanding military and security-related applications. The MIL-STD-462 standard describes measurement procedures for electromagnetic emission and interference testing, which are considered an integral part of many MIL-STD-461 requirements.

As an experienced EMC testing centre, EMCC competently performs all MIL-STD-462 measurement procedures — whether in our shielded rooms or during on-site assignments worldwide.

What is MIL STD 462?

Origin: MIL-STD-462 was originally intended as a separate standard for EMC measurement methods, but was later integrated into MIL-STD-461 or considered part of it.

Relationship to MIL-STD-461: newer versions often already include the measurement methods (depending on the version).

Example measurement methods:
• Measurement of conducted emissions (e.g. ‘conducted emissions’)
• Measurement of radiated emissions (e.g. ‘radiated emissions’)

Why MIL-STD-462 Testing Matters

  1. Ensuring compliance with emission requirements
Devices must keep electrical interference emissions within defined limits so that other systems are not disrupted.

  2. Integration into MIL-STD-461
Many tenders and system requirements stipulate that associated measurement procedures (originally defined in MIL-STD-462) must be fulfilled.

  3. Early detection of design problems
Early measurements allow disruptive emission sources in the design to be identified and corrected before costly changes become necessary.

  4. Verifiability & audits
The measurement results serve as evidence for clients, testing authorities and in certification processes.

Typical Application Areas

  • Military electronic modules and subsystems

  • Communication equipment (radio devices, data links)

  • Control and guidance systems

  • Vehicles, drones (UAVs)

  • Avionics/aircraft systems

  • Power supply and on-board networks in military platforms
