Manage tabs in Chrome
You can open multiple tabs in Chrome. You can also check and switch between all your tabs. When you open a new tab, Chrome opens a personalized New Tab page.
Some of the ways you can customize your New Tab page content are with:

Common actions with tabs
Perform basic actions when you search the web on Chrome.
Open a new tab- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- At the top right, tap More and then New tab New tab.
Tip: At the top of your Chrome window, you can also open a new tab when you tap New tab New tab .
If you haven't used a tab or tab group for 14 days or more, it moves to the "Inactive tabs" section. You can easily access and restore the inactive tabs and tab groups to the main tab switcher whenever you want to use them again.
To manage your inactive tabs and tab groups:
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- On the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs and then Inactive tabs.
- At the top of the tab grid, you can find inactive tabs and tab groups.
- To open, tap the tab or tab group.
Tip: When a tab becomes active again, the active tab count will be updated.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs. Any open tabs will appear.
- At the top right of the tab you want to close, tap Close Close. You can also swipe to close the tab.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs. Any open tabs will appear.
- Tap More and then Close all tabs.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- On the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs and then Inactive tabs.
- At the top of the tab grid, you can find your inactive tabs.
- At the bottom, tap Close all inactive tabs and then Close all.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap More and then Settings Settings.
- Under "Advanced," tap Tabs and tab groups and then Move to inactive section.
- To hide inactive tabs and tab groups automatically, select the time period.
- To never hide inactive tabs and tab groups, tap Never.
Tips:
- In the "Inactive" section, tabs and tab groups are automatically closed after 6 months. Synced tab groups are closed but not deleted.
- If you don’t want to close inactive tabs after 6 months, turn off Automatically close inactive items.
- To access the settings page within "Inactive tabs," at the top right, tap More and then Settings.
- To access tabs and groups from other devices, under "Tabs and tab groups," turn on Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs. Any open tabs will appear.
- Swipe to the tab you want and tap it.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Touch and hold the tab you want to move.
- Drag the tab to a different position.
Important: When you create or edit a tab group, Chrome automatically saves and syncs changes across devices where you're signed in with the same Google Account.
From the context menu
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To add to a pre-existing tab group, open the tab you want.
- At the top right, tap More and then Add tab to group .
- If you don’t have any tab groups, select Add tab to new group.
- From the list, select the tab group where you want the tab to go.
From the tab switcher
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- To create a tab group, use drag and drop:
- Touch and hold a tab.
- Pull over another tab or tab group you want to group it with.
- Enter the tab group name.
- Select the tab group color.
- Tap Done.
- To add a tab to an existing tab group, use drag and drop:
- Touch and hold a tab.
- Pull over another tab or tab group you want to group it with.
- To create a tab group, use Add tab group:
- Tap Tab groups Grid view.
- At the top left, tap New tab group New tab.
- Enter the tab group name.
- Select the tab group color.
- Tap Done.
- To create a tab group, use the tab context menu:
- Tap More and then New tab group.
- Enter the tab group name.
- Select the tab group color.
- Tap Done.
- To add a tab to an existing tab group, use the tab context menu:
- Tap More and then Add tab to group .
- From the list, select the tab group where you want the tab to go.
- Tap Done.
- To create a tab group, use drag and drop:
- On your Android device, open Chrome .
- Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- To merge tab groups:
- Touch and hold, then drag a tab into a group you want to merge it with.
- This action can delete the dragged tab group across devices.
- Touch and hold, then drag a tab into a group you want to merge it with.
- To edit a tab group:
- To change the tab color:
- Tap the tab group.
- On the left of the tab group name, tap the color.
- Select the color of the tab group.
- To rename the tab group:
- Tap the tab group.
- To rename, select the title.
- Enter the new tab group name.
- To change the tab color:
- To find tabs in a group: Select a group.
- To remove a tab from a group:
- Tap the tab group.
- Touch and hold the tab you want to remove.
- Drag the tab to the "Remove from group" area at the bottom of your screen.
- To close a tab group:
- Touch and hold a tab group or tap More .
- Tap Close group.
- A closed group isn't deleted and is saved in the bookmarks bar or in the menu. You can re-open a closed group again.
- To close all tab groups:
- At the top right, tap More .
- From the dropdown, tap Close all tabs.
- To confirm, tap Close all tabs and groups.
- To open or re-open a tab group:
- Tap Tab groups Grid view.
- Under "Tab Groups," select the name of the tab group you want to open or re-open.
- To merge tab groups:
Tips:
- To open a link in a new tab in a group, touch and hold the link, then tap Open in new tab in group.
- To keep tab groups from automatically syncing across your devices, tap Settings and then Sync, and then uncheck Open Tabs.
- By default, tabs and tab groups are automatically open from other devices. To turn off:
- Tap Settings and then Tabs and tab groups.
- Under "Tabs and tab groups," turn off Automatically open tab groups from other devices.
- On your Android tablet:
- To add a tab into an existing tab group in the tab strip, drag the tab into the group.
- To remove a tab from a tab group in the tab strip, drag the tab out of the group.
Important: When you delete a tab group, it’ll be removed on your device and other devices that use the same Google Account.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Touch and hold a tab group or tap More .
- Tap Delete group.
- To confirm, tap Delete group.
You can also:
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap Switch tabs Switch tabs and then Grid Grid view.
- Select the tab group name you want to delete.
- Tap Delete.
- To confirm, tap Delete group.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- Navigate to a link you want to open.
- Touch and hold the link.
- Tap Open in new tab in group.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap More and then Reload Reload.
Perform bulk actions on tabs
You can perform bulk actions when you tap More or when you touch and hold tabs.
Close tabs- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Tap More and then Select tabs.
- Select the tabs you want to close.
- Tap More and then Close tabs.
- On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Touch and hold any tab or tap More .
- Tap Select tabs.
- Choose the tabs you want to group.
- Tap More and then Group tabs.
- On your Android device, open Chrome .
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Open a tab group containing the tabs you want to ungroup.
- Touch and hold any tab, or tap More and then Select tabs.
- Choose the tabs you want to ungroup.
- Tap More and then Ungroup tabs.
- On your Android device, open Chrome .
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs .
- Open a tab group containing the tabs you want to close.
- Tap More and then Select tabs.
- Select the tabs you want to delete from the group.
- Tap More and then Close tabs.
- On your Android device, open Chrome .
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Touch and hold any tab, or tap More and then Select tabs.
- Choose the tabs you want to share.
- Tap More and then Share tabs.
- Choose where you want to share.
- On your Android device, open Chrome .
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs .
- Open a tab group containing the tabs you want.
- Tap Select tabs.
- Choose the tabs you want to share.
- Tap More and then Share tabs.
- On your Android device, open Chrome .
- To the right of the address bar, tap Switch tabs Switch tabs.
- Touch and hold any tab, or tap More and then Select tabs.
- Choose the tabs you want to bookmark.
- Tap More and then Bookmark tabs.
Open new windows on your Android tablet in Chrome
Open a new window
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap More and then New window.
Move a tab to another window
Move a tab from the menu
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- In the tab you want to move, tap More .
- Tap Move to other window.
- Select the window to move the tab to.
- Tap Move tab.
Move a tab by drag and drop
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- In the tab you want to move, touch and hold, then drag it to the other window.
- You can drop the tab in the tab strip, tab switcher, or over site content of the other window.
Tip: When you drag a tab over site content, the site content will be replaced by the contents of that tab.
Important: Split screen only works on Samsung tablets.
To open a new window and trigger split screen:
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- To open a tab in a new window, touch and hold, then drag and drop it to the edge of your screen.
Switch windows
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap More and then Manage windows.
- Tap the window you'd like to open.
Close a window
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- Tap More and then Manage windows.
- Next to the window you want to close, tap More and then Close window.
- To confirm, tap Close window.
Enter desktop windowing in Chrome on your Android tablet
Important: This feature is available if you have Android 15 and up on your Android tablet.
For desktop-like productivity, you can manage, resize, navigate, and create floating windows on your Android tablet with desktop windowing.
Enter desktop windowingThrough drag and drop
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- Open the full screen window that you want to convert to a floating window.
- Touch and hold, then drag down on the top center handle on your screen.
Tip: You can also enter desktop windowing this way while in split screen mode.
From Samsung DeX shortcut
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- To open your device’s system notification panel, from the top of the screen, swipe down.
- Tap DeX.
- At the top right of Chrome window, tap Desktop windowing .
From the app header
While in desktop windowing, you can switch between full screen, split screen, and floating window.
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.
- At the top left of the window, tap the app header.
- Select your preferred window view:
- Full screen
- Split screen
- Desktop windowing
While in desktop windowing, you can resize your Chrome window based on your device’s screen width.
- On your Android tablet, in an open Chrome window, touch and hold the bottom right corner.
- To decrease or increase its size, drag the corner in or out from the window.
You can manage your windows when you have 2 or more windows.
- On your Android tablet, open Chrome Chrome.

In "Manage windows," you can:

Open a new window: Under the "Active" section, tap New window .
- Switch between "Active" and "Inactive" windows: Tap either Active or Inactive.
- To manage an active or inactive window, tap More .
- Restore an inactive window:
- Under the "Inactive" section, select the window you want to restore.
- Tap Restore.

Tip: To manage windows on your device’s taskbar menu, touch and hold Chrome Chrome.
- To open a new window from your device’s taskbar menu, tap New window .
- To display your current windows with an image, tap Manage windows .
