Manage Chrome policies using NinjaOne

As an admin, you can manage Chrome policies for devices in your organization directly from your NinjaOne console. By integrating Chrome Administrative (ADMX) templates, you can manage settings, configure user features, and enhance security across all your managed Windows machines.

This article describes how to add the Chrome ADMX templates to NinjaOne and apply a policy to your target devices.

Before you begin

Ensure you have the following:

  • Administrative access to your NinjaOne console.
  • The target Windows devices, managed by a NinjaOne agent.
  • The latest Chrome ADMX templates.

Step 1: Add the Chrome ADMX templates to NinjaOne

You need to upload the Chrome policy templates so that NinjaOne can recognize and use them.

  1. Download and unzip the Google Chrome Enterprise bundle.
  2. Locate the Configuration folder, then open the admx folder.

Note: You'll need the chrome.admx and google.admx files for later, as well as their corresponding language files (for example, en-US/chrome.adml and en-US/google.adml).

  3. In your NinjaOne console, go to Configuration > Policies.
  4. On the Policy Management tab, select ADMX Templates.
  5. Click Add New Template and upload the google.admx file first, because chrome.admx depends on it.
  6. Click Add New Template again and upload the chrome.admx file.
  7. Upload the corresponding .adml language files for both templates. NinjaOne automatically associates them with their ADMX files.

Step 2: Create and configure a policy

After uploading the templates, you can create policies to apply specific settings. For example, you can set a default Homepage or turn off Incognito mode.

  1. Go to the Policies section and click Create New Policy.
  2. Select the relevant OS (for example, Windows Workstation).
  3. Give your policy a descriptive name, such as Corp - Chrome Settings.
  4. Click Add a Condition and select Policy Management.
  5. Go to Select a template and you should find Google and Google Chrome listed.

Set a default homepage

  1. Go to Google Chrome > Startup, Home page and New Tab page.
  2. Select Configure the home page URL and set this to Enabled.
  3. Go to Options and enter the full URL for your company homepage (for example, https://www.your-company.com).

Turn off Incognito mode

  1. Go to Google Chrome.
  2. Select Incognito mode availability and set this to Enabled.
  3. Go to Options and select Incognito mode disabled.

Step 3: Apply the policy to target devices

After configuring your desired settings, you must assign the policy to the correct devices.

  1. Save the condition and the policy.
  2. Go to the group or organization you want to apply the policy to.
  3. Go to the Policies tab for that group.
  4. Select your new policy (for example, Corp - Chrome Settings).

The policy will be applied to the devices during their next check-in cycle. You can force an immediate check-in from the device page, if needed.

Step 4: Verify the policy on a client machine

To confirm the policy was successfully applied, you can check on a machine.

  1. On a target device, open the Chrome browser.
  2. Go to chrome://policy tosee a list of all policies applied to the browser.
  3. Find the settings you configured (for example, HomepageLocation and IncognitoModeAvailability) and verify that their status and value are correct.

The Source column should indicate it is a Platform policy, meaning it was set by a system-level configuration like the one pushed by NinjaOne.
