Summarize chats in Google Chat
If you're a Google Workspace user, conversation summaries are now automatically available by default in spaces with many read and unread messages. Some users can use Gemini to request summaries for read and unread conversations in Home.
Turn conversation summaries in spaces on & off
To stay updated on long, read, and unread conversations where you’re a member, use conversation summaries. When you turn on conversation summaries, they:

Proactively show for gDMs and Spaces with many unread messages.

Summarize conversations in English.
Important: Conversation summaries are only available for Google Workspace accounts.
Turn conversation summary on & off in Google Chat- On your computer, open Google Chat.
- Click Settings and then Message & Media and then Conversation summary.
- Turn on or off the toggle to turn on or off the conversation summary in the chat.
Note: This setting doesn't completely disable chat summaries. When the toggle is on, chat summaries appear in Spaces and Group DMs with many unread messages. When the toggle is off, you'll see a "Summarize unread" option instead.
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- Click Settings and then See all settings and then Chat and Meet.
- Click Manage chat settings and then Message & Media and then Conversation summary.
- Turn on or off the toggle to turn on or off the conversation summary in the chat.

Use Gemini summaries for read & unread conversations
Important:
- This feature requires an eligible Google Workspace subscription. Learn about Gemini features and plans.
- This feature is available in select supported languages. Learn about supported languages for summaries in home.
You can use Gemini to show summaries for read and unread conversations that include 1:1 direct messages, group direct messages, spaces, and threads. Summaries aren't available for:
- Messages with apps
- Conversations with history turned off
Tip: To enable conversation and space summaries in Home, turn on smart features in Gmail.

You can choose to summarize a specific read and unread conversation in Home.
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Chat in Gmail.
- Hover over the conversation you want to summarize in Home.
- Click Summarize.
Summarize unread messages in a conversation
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat .
- Choose a conversation with unread messages to summarize.
- Click Summarize unread.
- Under the "Recent discussions" section, you can find a summary list of your recent unread messages.
- Click Close summary.
Tip: For conversations with many unread messages, summaries automatically expand without the need to click.
Give feedback about Gemini conversation summaries
Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request. Because feedback may be human readable, please do not submit data that contains personal, confidential, or sensitive information.
If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.
- At the bottom of the generated output, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
- In the pop-up window, you can select the data you want to share along with your feedback, including additional context and outputs. If you don’t want to share certain data, you can uncheck it.
- If you select Bad suggestion , select Next to select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
- Click Submit.
