Learn about your role as a space owner or manager

When you create a space in Google Chat, you automatically become the space owner. As a space owner, you can:

  • Remove and add participants.
  • Promote other members to be space managers, or remove them from the list of space managers.
  • Delete a space.
  • Delete messages.
  • Edit the space name, avatar, and description.

As a space manager, you have all the permissions of a space owner except the ability to:

  • Promote other members to be space owners.
  • Remove space owners from the list of space owners.
  • Delete a space.

Space owners who use a work or school account can update additional settings, such as space access and permissions. Learn how to change space access and permissions.

Add members

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. Click the space name and then Manage members.
  4. Click + Add.
  5. Enter the name or email of the person or group that you want to add.
  6. Click Add.

Remove members

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. Click the space name and then Manage members.
  4. Point to the person and click More actions and then Remove from space.

Change a user's role

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. Click the space name and then Manage members.
  4. Next to the person's name, under "Role," click the dropdown.
    • To make someone a space owner: Select Owner.
    • To make someone a space manager: Select Manager.
    • To make someone a space member: Select Member.

Tips:

  • Not all users can change other users' roles.
  • The last space owner can't leave a space unless they delete the space or make someone else a space owner.

Delete messages

Important: The "Delete messages" feature is only available to specific subscriptions and might not be available on your work or school account.

Space owners and managers can delete any message in a space. Space members can only delete their own messages. Learn how to delete a message as a space member.
  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. On the left, select the space.
  3. Point to the message you want to delete.
  4. Click More actions and then Delete .
  5. In the window that opens, click Delete.

Tip: When a message is deleted in a space, a time stamp may appear. The time stamp remains for 30 days or longer based on the retention policy of your company.
