Describe the issue

Broadly, the code samples repository shows a range of styles for usage of the Kotlin SDK, some of which are not best practices for typical situations. This leads to user confusion as demonstrated in #1261. Take a comprehensive look at the samples repo, catalog areas for improvement, and work to incorporate the updates into public docs.
