An early software build of Gmail 5.0 is unofficially available, confirming that support for IMAP, POP and Exchange mail accounts for the Android client.
I upgraded from a Kindle Paperwhite to a Voyage this week. Was it worth it? Google’s new Inbox app takes some getting used to but shows potential, while the Apple SIM in new iPads won’t meet its full potential for consumer choice.
After using Gmail for nearly 10 years, the new Inbox app is the most radical change I’ve seen yet. It works well if you buy into the task-centric approach but may take some time to get used to. And it’s far better on a mobile device.
A Gmail bug might have inadvertently deleted messages or reported them as spam for some users.

Get a grip people. The same folks who say email is dead are the first to scream when email goes down. Am I right?

Google now lets other Google+ members send messages to your Gmail account and can use your Google+ name and photo in ads. Here’s how to stop both from happening.

Gmail users now will actually get and see the images in their messages without all that tiresome clicking. But third-party marketers may not be so cheery.

Right on time: Just as I switched my Google-centric life from an Android tablet to the iPad Air, Google improves Gmail for iOS. The new features make it easier to compose and read mails in full screen and switch between multiple accounts.

Hope you like the card-based user interface of Google Now. It’s already a staple of Google Glass and as of Wednesday comes to Gmail for Android to improve the conversation view.
Companies are doing everything they can to stay out of the “Promotions” tab in Gmail’s new tabbed inbox — including some deep discounts.
Google’s service for push email on iOS will go away for many users when they upgrade to a major new iOS version, or they get a new device. That’s coming for many this fall — here’s how to deal with it.
Want a new way to sort through all your email? No, it’s not another email startup coming your way. Gmail is adding a new way for you to view your emails which are sorted by type, in an effort to make getting through your messages even easier.

Even as Apple has decoupled its iPhone partnership with Google for everything except search, the web company has still found a way to reach its users who have iPhones and iPads.

When it comes to mobile mail, today is one of the best times in recent memory to find a better solution. But changing email habits, even when they’re bad, turned out to be tougher than I expected.

When Google announced it was dropping Sync support last month, it left Gmail users on Windows Phone reeling. An extension give Microsoft time to address the situation.
By creating a bevy of new iOS apps, what Google has been up to is becoming more obvious. It’s made it its mission to not just compete with Apple with the Android platform and Nexus mobile devices, but battle Apple on its own platform.
by Erica Ogg
Other improvements to the app include sending and receiving attachments within the app, the ability to archive, label, star, delete and report spam, read email as threaded conversations, see profile pictures in those conversations, and respond to Google Calendar invites and Google+ posts.

Gmail users on iOS have an early gift prior to this week’s Google developer event: The Gmail on iOS app was updated on Monday with Notification Center support and more, suggesting that Google wants users to access its services everywhere on all sorts of mobile devices.

Google has re-introduced its native iOS Gmail app to the App Store, with a new version number and instructions to delete the old version if you managed to grab it before it was pulled prior to installing this one. Besides bug fixes, little has changed.
BlackBerry may not be a top priority for Google or one of the other major software vendors, but to kill off a decent app that many of us BlackBerry owners used is just wrong. Effective Nov. 22, Google is ending support for BlackBerry’s native Gmail app.

Cloud-based Gmail is a more energy efficient option compared to companies’ locally-hosted email solutions, according to Google. That’s largely due to the inherent efficiencies of the cloud, and also Google’s own brand of energy efficient servers and data centers.
We’ve probably all had times when we’ve been so busy we didn’t have time to deal with an important email when we we read it. The danger is that it ends up being forgotten. Snooze Your Email for Gmail may be able to help.

Did you know that you can simply copy and paste images into Gmail messages using Chrome? While drag-and-dropping images messages has been available in Gmail for a while now, being able to paste images from the clipboard is arguably an even more useful feature.

As part of a raft of small changes to Gmail, the app now has the option to disable its automatic saving of contacts. While many people find the ability find auto-saving useful, for some it ends up creating too much clutter in their contacts list.

If you need to securely share data like a password, bank account or credit card number, Lockify is an easy way to do so. Once your message has been encrypted, you are given a link that can be sent via email, SMS or Facebook private message.

Some time ago, we put together an official WWD add-ons collection for Firefox, gathering together our favorite add-ons at the time. With the speedy Firefox 4 being released this week, some of you may be giving it a try, so I thought I’d update the list.

Google has released a new Gmail Labs feature called Smart Labels that should help to keep your inbox more organized and free of clutter. It automatically labels and filters certain types of email, such as group mailing lists, social network notifications and newsletters.

In the wake of Google accidentally deleting some Gmail accounts over the weekend, I thought I’d share my Gmail backup method. While Google has apparently nearly restored all of those missing accounts, now’s a good time to review your own backup strategy.
by Simon Mackie
Over the weekend, Google apparently accidentally deleted some 150,000 Gmail accounts. We’re all growing increasingly reliant on the cloud. If a cloud vendor accidentally deleted your data, locked you out of your account, or shuttered one of your favorite services, what would you do?

The folks at Google must never rest, as the update just released for Gmail for Android demonstrates. The new Gmail is available for Android 2.2 and above and adds some nice features, including support for Priority Inbox and improvements in composing new mail.
Gmail’s Priority Inbox feature — a smart feature that learns which of your emails are the most important and displays them in a separate inbox — now provides feedback on why it considers particular emails important and has a tweaked algorithm that should mean it learns faster.
by Simon Mackie
After archiving a message in Gmail, you’re taken back to the inbox view. A new Labs feature, Auto-advance, modifies that behavior; it takes you straight to the next message. It should save some time when you’ve got a full inbox that you want to power through.

Want to make sure that your Gmail account is secure? Google has provided a handy online checklist that contains the steps needed to protect your account against hackers. The list is organized into five sections, and most items have a “read more” link for further explanation.

Ever wanted to see a graph of how much email you’ve received from particular person, or about a particular topic, over time? Graph Your Inbox is a Chrome extension that plots the results of Gmail search queries. It’s like having Google Analytics for your inbox.

Google today is launching a new feature (in beta) for its popular Gmail service — Priority Inbox — which uses machine-learning technologies and marries them to Google’s search capabilities. Some of us might have a near-term solution to handling the backbreaking load of email.

One of the most useful Labs features is called “Undo Send.” Ever hit the send button on a message and then immediately regretted it? Undo Send stops the message from being sent for a few seconds, which enables you to change your mind.

Shaun Gallagher of the Pressbin Coding Blog got in touch to let us know about a couple of useful Gmail hacks he’s created: A “Mark All As Read” button and a hack that removes the new Mail/Contacts/Tasks menu from the upper-left menu.

Google Contacts has some useful new features, including sorting contacts by last name, custom labels and keyboard shortcuts. Long-time readers of WebWorkerDaily will know that I’m a big fan of web applications that provide keyboard shortcuts, so it’s great to see them in Contacts, too.

Open an email with an attachment and hover your mouse pointer over the attachment’s icon — you should see a tooltip that says “Click to view OR drag to your desktop to save”. Simply drag the file to where you’d like to save it.

As Google has infiltrated many of our online activities — mail, calendaring, search history, blogging and even YouTube viewing — it asks us to use a single Google account. But finally, the company is on the verge of allowing users to use multiple accounts within the same browser.

Google’s been busy recently adding HTML5-powered features to Gmail, but they’ve only been offered to users running the latest versions of Firefox and Chrome. Now those features are becoming more widely available, with the news that Google has extended support to Safari 5.
by Simon Mackie
Google occasionally incorporates Labs features into Gmail, but many of them seem destined to remain stuck in Labs forever, so probably won’t be seen by most Gmail users. With that in mind, which Gmail Labs features you think should “graduate” and become part of Gmail itself?
by Simon Mackie
Google has added a neat new Labs feature to Gmail that shifts the position of the icon column in your inbox to the left-hand side of the screen, giving the icons more prominence, so it’s easier to see what’s in your inbox.
by Simon Mackie
Gmail’s getting more like a desktop email client every day. The Gmail team recently added the ability to drag and drop files into emails to add them as attachments, and today they announced that you can now drag and drop images to insert them inline.

Since 2005, a trademark dispute has caused Gmail to be called Google Mail in the UK, and Brits signing up for accounts have been given addresses at the googlemail.com domain, rather than the snappier gmail.com domain. Google has just announced that the service is reverting back.
by Simon Mackie
Google has announced that nested labels are now available in Gmail. It’s a really useful feature that provides an additional layer of organization for your inbox, and should be a welcome addition if you’re used to working with folders in other email clients.
by Simon Mackie
Many people have been asking for a unified email inbox on their iPhone, rather than having to switch between accounts. While there isn’t an official Apple (s aapl) way to do this, you can fake it yourself using Gmail and its ability to check email from other accounts.

Rapportive is a free browser plugin (available as both a Firefox add-on and as a Chrome extension) for that replaces the adverts in Gmail’s sidebar with useful information about your contacts: a photo, bio and links to social media accounts (Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, etc).

Google continues to bring web apps closer to par with third-party software. The latest Gmail enhancement speeds up pop-out windows for mail and chat sessions. Gone is the slow load time for these windows, unless you run Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Is it a standards issue?
A while back I reviewed an iPhone app called reMail that I really liked. It allowed users to search their email archives very comprehensively. Apparently Google (s goog) was impressed with the application, too, and as Liz reported over on GigaOM, Google has purchased the company.

Google hasn’t been a big factor in the social networking space but put all of the puzzle pieces together today. Google Buzz is the newest Gmail add-in that also supports iPhone and Android browsers. It works, but not with the friends I want it to.
Google reportedly plans to add a stream of recent status messages and media from users’ contacts to Gmail. It’s a good idea, following Google’s stated goal of combining social features across its products, but one that will have to be executed well.

Hotmail, known as Windows Live Hotmail these days, has a long history as a free, web-based email service. Many people have abandoned Hotmail for Gmail and Yahoo Mail, but it’s still more of a focal point at Microsoft than you may think.
