Re: Updated 64-bit Gentoo Image for RPi3 Released (now also for RPi3B+ and RPi4B)

Mon Aug 17, 2020 2:31 am

After reading this thread and another from the General Discussion that it is linked to, I tried the new 64 bit version on my RPi 4 - 4 Gb.

When I try to boot, my older HP display does not display correctly. The is a shape across the middle that is roughly a wedge that is shifted. It is as if it is rotated sideways relative to the rest of the screen. Everything is there, it is just broken. I tried a factory reset on the monitor and did another fresh burn to the SD card. Same result.

I experiment a lot with my RPis. I have never had an issue with this monitor before. I went back to the beta version of Raspi 64 bit. Monitor still works.

Unfortunately, I don't have another monitor to try.

jlgreer1,

sorry to hear you are having trouble with this ><

If you have access to a PC you can try the following. Mount the first partition of the microSD card to which you have written the Gentoo image (it is formatted with the FAT filesystem, so you should be able to access it even on a Windows PC), and then edit the file config.txt (at the top level of this filesystem), uncommenting the following line, so it reads:

Code: Select all

hdmi_safe=1
Leave the rest of the file as-is, save, eject the microSD card and try booting again. Hopefully you will now get a successful boot with a basic, low-res display.

Once running, you can then use the RPi Config Tool (Applications -> Settings -> RPi Config Tool) to choose a more appropriate resolution.

Not sure why the automatic detection is not working in this case (as it does work for the vast majority of monitors, out of the box), but does work OK in PiOS64. If you could dump the EDID data from PiOS, that might help to narrow things down.

Best, sakaki

Editing the config.txt did the trick. I had to edit the file from an auxilliary drive on the RPi. Win 10 would not let me open the file system.

Ubuntu installed and ran fine. It still doesn't care for my monitor. No settings were available to make it as clear as RPi OS.

It was worth a try. I just prefer Debian/Raspi OS

Thank you for your help, Jeff

Hi Sakaki,
Hope you’re getting on ok with all the
work from home and restrictions.

I just ran a genup, and it came back with

Emtee error caught signal.

It was also saying a lot about dependency
Required for kodi 19 alpha. and Libcdio 2.1

Thought maybe you would like to know.

I will try it again, in case there was a network
error or something. The whole thing was taking
a lot longer than usual.

Hope you’re are doing well.

Update
It finally kicked in to 160 updates from @world
Big update week.
Thanks.

Update 2
The genup finally failed with an error, after trying to
compile. Libsdl2-2.0.12-r2

It did about 143 updates, but then hit that compile twice
And finally failed. I think it said it had like 18 updates to go

Maybe you know what’s up.

Thanks
gazzy

Hi Gazzy -

tbth, things have been a bit crazy at work recently - we have a skeleton staff returned to our (physical) office (which includes me!) and a huge backlog of stuff to get through (remote working having proven not quite so friction-free as hoped). So apologies, I haven't had the same bandwidth for genpi64 recently >< Hopefully normal service can be resumed shortly...

However, I've just pushed a new set of updates that'll hopefully work for you (including binhost packages). To get it, just run genup as usual.

There are a few held packages: kodi-19 (due to libcdio's required slot, clashing with that stipulated by mpv & friends); python:3.7.9 (need to create a pgo ebuild for this) and as usual rpi3-64bit-firmware (held back by the bcm2711-kernel-bis-bin, via the with-matching-boot-fw USE flag). I'll have a look at these over the next week or so. In the meantime, please let me know if you experience any issues with the update.

hope all is well with you,

best,

sakaki

Hey Sakaki,

You fixed it! The genup run went through today without a hitch. It updated the 18 left over updates with emtee. After a few more clean ups it all finished correctly. It’s good to know it won’t give anyone else any problems.

Things have been fine here, we have been in lockdown for a few months, only allowed out for an hour for exercise and to do grocery shopping. No sit downs in restaurants, but we still have take away. The country is running on online shopping, which has high backlogs in delivery.

The coffee is still great, but no avocado on toast at a cafe. We are shifting to 2 hours exercise tomorrow so that should be a bit better. New case numbers per day are in double digits, but the government is very strict about getting to zero cases a day.

Hope your team can get all caught up, and enjoy some free time.

Thanks for all your help.
All the Best,

Gazzy

Thanks Sakaki, been having genup issues, sounds like this might fix them.

Some new Kernel and Mesa stuff got added recently.
The next release should be lots of fun.
Take your time, we are not going anywhere anytime soon.
Now that the PC is back at work my Pi4 is now back into action as my home desktop.

I know working from home was fun for a while but not very productive in the long run.
Second week back at work in Qld, have not bothered to unpack, our dictator could do anything.

Gazzy, sounds like you are in the world leading Agenda2030 city of Melbourne.
Nice to see Melbourne made that list of 33 cities.
Everyone is enjoying the "new normal" show you guys are putting on.
I guess buying avo's from the Queen Vic market is now banned too?

Hello Sakaki thanks for your great build installed on my raspberry pi 4

I have a problem a .SH software (papercut NG server) I want to install via terminal thinks the OS is 32bit.
https://www.papercut.com/products/ng/download/

Can you tell me why the software installer thinks the computer OS is 32bit????

sakaki stepping down from gentoo-on-rpi-64bit (aka genpi64) maintenance (effective EOL notice)

Dear fellow Gentoo and RPi enthusiasts -

I am afraid I have some difficult news to share.

As some of you already know, the last few months have been very challenging for me in terms of bandwidth, because my current, "real-world" job has required increasing (and ultimately, unsustainable) amounts of my time, struggling to deliver a much increased workload with a skeleton staff post-lockdown. While I need to stay employed in this difficult environment, my family life has been coming under immense strain, and it became clear that something had to give.

As a result, I have -- after much debate -- decided to accept a recent offer (which arrived unsolicited, and to my surprise) from another org to join them.

In many senses they offer a perfect fit, as the role is a lead architect position focused on post-quantum crypto for embedded systems, two of my real-world areas of practice, the org is world-renowned, and while the time commitment is still large, it is manageable.

However, it also comes at a significant (non-financial) cost, as their legals essentially prohibit me from contributing to external projects in my spare time to any material extent (sadly, this includes genpi64; which they know all about... unsurprising, given who they are I guess ><).

Consequently, I must announce that I will be stepping down as the maintainer for this project (and a number of others on GitHub, such as raspbian-nspawn-64) with immediate effect. As I am the sole maintainer for these (and since, my bad, no real succession planning has been done), this effectively means these projects are going EOL at this point.

For the meantime, I will leave the repos up (for historical interest and since they may be of use still in certain applications); however, there will be no further updates to the underlying binhost etc. (other than for the kernel autobuilds, which will remain running as they are entirely unattended atm; but, I will not attempt to fix them if they break). Nor will I be accepting/actioning further pull requests / bug reports from this point. Email requests for support will also have to be politely declined ><. I will continue to monitor this forum, but will be unable to provide in-depth technical responses to queries as before, and any responses may be somewhat delayed.

My sincere and heartfelt apologies to those who have contributed to, used and commented on genpi64 over the nearly four years since I first released it (seems such a long time ago now!). With the benefit of hindsight, it is apparent that I should have spent more time creating a maintenance community around this project (and others), but, in truth, I never expected it to gain the (modest!) popularity that it did; it was just a proof-of-concept that kind of grew...

Of course, this is not the end in any sense for Gentoo on the aarch64 / 64-bit RPi platform, which remains very much a going concern (as you can see from the many active contributors on the Gentoo on ARM subforum). Also, given that the custom overlay for gentoo-on-rpi-64bit is still available, you can (relatively easily) create your own 'downstream' Gentoo-based distro, if you so desire, and take up from where I am leaving off. If that piques your interest, please go for it!

In closing, I'd just like to note my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has used the image over the years, and to the fantastic team of devs and enthusiasts who make up the Gentoo and Raspberry Pi communities (a particular shout out to ShiftPlusOne!). It's truly been an honour to be a (tiny!) part of those endeavours for a little while, and I hope genpi64 has helped, in some small way, to demonstrate that running a 64-bit OS on systems such as the very capable RPi4 can make a lot of sense.

So, kind regards, stay well, and I trust our paths may cross again in the future ^-^

You have made learning another distribution and making our own personal window manager fun.
Thanks you for all the hand holding, support, tips and fantastic wiki effort.

I had no idea what "Post" Quantum Crypto means, I had to look it up, very big brain stuff, no PICNIC?

Time to roll up my sleeves and Gentoo64 5.10 with Vulkan?
Too much to learn, still.

Thanks for contributing so much to the community here. From my point of view, it would be nice if you could have landed a job with Raspberry Pi. Once I had opportunity for a cryptography related job. After thinking about it, I got worried about all the possible spy versus spy stuff.

Stay safe and all the best.

First of all, thanks to Sakaki for building the tool in the first place and what a shame that legalese prevents you from keeping it going. Second, thanks to Adam for forking the package and adopting it in Sakaki's stead. Third, what is the best place to post questions regarding how to configure specific apps with raspbian-nspawn-64 from now on - the GitHub issues, or the forums?

Ideally "issues" on GitHub for rpos-nspawn-64. Sakaki requested I keep a link to her original post so people know what is happening under the hood. I'm currently in the process of reviewing any outstanding issues and expanding the documentation as time permits.

I just wanted to say one thing as a user of your project... (I've lurked in these forums for a long time, but I created a user account solely to post this message, so I do hope you read it)...

You are an excellent technical writer. I say that as a former professional technical writer who wrote technical manuals for embedded systems for 8 years.

Your documentation and instructions are top-notch. I cannot stress enough how rare of a skill this is. All the documentation you wrote was not only extremely detailed, but also easy to follow for a less-than-advanced Gentoo user such as myself.

Of course, I got out of the tech writing game because I found it to be boring as hell  ...regardless, I still consider it to be an extremely important skill in life. I think it is extremely important for novices and hobbyists to be able to learn new technologies and technical skills that they may be interested in.

Anyway, I know that is sort of off-topic, but I just wanted to let you know. I definitely learned some thing from your work, and I continue to find your RPi Gentoo image useful. Thank you for your contributions to technology.

I wanted to say big thank you to @Sasaki.
Genpi64 is an awesome piece of job, hope someone will be able to handle it.
But it’s not really about the genpi64 itself.
It’s about your attitude in sharing your knowledge and introducing average users to an advanced Linux distro inn a style.
My knowledge of Linux is today MUCH wider than it was year ago, thanks to you and your great documentation which not only helped me in setting up the system, but actually explained me how stuff works in a way no one before did.
Time spent with Gentoo - which in fact I find still „too hardcore" for everyday use - and your outstanding articles/tutorials was a trigger which truly motivated me in exploring Linux in all its flavors and improving my knowledge and skills.
Thank you very much for that.
Best luck!

Hello,

first, thanks all for your kind comments, I do appreciate them ^-^

Second, please note that I have additionally relicensed some of my GPL3 and GPL3+ code under GPL2, to assist with upstreaming by those taking over maintenance of my projects (as Gentoo uses GPL2 for its main-repo ebuilds, etc).

For more details, please see my post on the Gentoo forums here.

kind regards,
