Are there any 802.11n 5Ghz 300Mbit/s usb dongles that work without a hub? I've searched, googled and tried two different models with no luck.

If your Pi is a rev2 board (with the 2 massive holes) then it should be able to manage a Wifi dongle without a powered hub providing you have suitable power supply.
The early Pi rev1 boards had polyfuse protection per USB port which meant only low powered devices like flash drives or keyboards worked but not Wifi dongles.
When buying a Wifi dongle always check the chipset for compatibility, most should be okay on the Pi but some may not have firmware support for the 5GHz band yet even in hardware it does.

I do have the rev2 board, powered by an original Samsung Galaxy S4 power adapter (2A).

The D-Link DWA-160 (A2, AR9170) does start but stutters and hangs the Pi quickly when loaded.
CC&C WL-6210-V3 (RTL8192DU) doesn't even have support in OpenELEC...

TP-Link TL-WN821N (V3, AR7010) works but 2,4GHz wifi is quite unpleasant in crowded areas.

I've tested the Tenda W522U with OpenELEC and the 5Ghz works. With the ability on the B+ to push 1200mA from the USB ports, should run without a hub if you use a 2A P/S?

I've also tried the Cisco WUSB600N (V1.0) but the 5Ghz does not work with OpenELEC 4.0.7. Streams very nicely though on 2.4Ghz via a Cisco EA6500.

I bought the Tenda W522U based on your post and several others. I understand the B+ has a USB current limiter. Did you have to make any changes to get around this?

I'm planning to run the current version of OpenELEC on my B+, along with a Tenda W522U USB wifi adapter. Please let me know, if you see this post.

Hi Every body,

I am using Raspbmc with a TV guide and I needed to configure EDIMAX WiFi Dongle, it would not work at all until the day I found out that I have to install few things, i.e the following:

sudo apt-get install rfkill zd1211-firmware hostapd hostap-utils iw dnsmasq bridge-utils

Now it works like magic.
