RBP 500+ micro hdmi port issue

Mon Oct 06, 2025 2:45 am

Hi. Just want to share a minor annoyance I just came across with my RBP 500+, in case someone else happens to have the same problem.

I just bought a Raspberry Pi 500+ from a local Central Computer (and it was the last in stock). At the very beginning, I couldn't make it work with any of my three monitors. FWIW, RBP 500+ comes with 2x micro hdmi ports in the back. I have three micro hdmi to hdmi converters in hand, and neither of them works. The monitors were all black and prompting "no input signal" all the time. After struggling a while, I finally figured out why, and I tend to believe it is a design flaw.

The case of RBP 500+ is plastic. It is a little bit (< 0.5mm) too thick. Combining with some assembly errors, the micro hdmi female socket is a little bit too deep for regular male connectors, maybe just 0.5-1 mm too deep. This causes the male connector cannot be reliably inserted into the socket, thus the signal transmission is unreliable or unavailable. I observed the back structure and suspected it was the culprit, so I cut one of my micro hdmi adapter's rubber head a bit so that it could go in ~0.5mm deeper, and the monitor connected to it flashed the image for a second. This made me believe it is the socket's issue, but cutting the adapter couldn't give it enough clearance so the connection is still flaky.

My final solution was widening the socket hole a little bit, just enough for my adapter's head tuck in. It solves the issue once for all, except for it looks ugly (well on the brighter side, it adds a pinch of "DIYer" flavor, lol).

I would recommend the RBP designers consider fixing this issue, either by using thinner material for the backboard, or considering using metal back board like regular PC case does, or change to mini hdmi or even regular hdmi socket which I believe can be better aligned with the supporting board, and easier for the male connector to insert than micro hdmi.

Besides this little annoyance, I really love my RBP 500+!
